I actually don’t think this is that bad. Still could just be early.

I just think there is a lot going on with many fantasy elements included.

  2. CSA Says:

Not that bad? It’s pretty bad, get some coffee in you!

okay, its well drawn and pretty detailed… but look and the big beefy dragon with the wee tiny wings and as you point out in the mouse over of the pic, its got no arms. It looks stoopid

Looks like an 80s publication, so we can forgive the ghastly yellow.. but it still looks like vomit.

  3. Nix Says:

I dunno, dragons with arms look stupider to me. They’ve got, what, six limbs, what are they, insects?

(sorry, my inner biologist is showing)

Agreed that this particular rendition of a quadruped dragon looks really stupid. They should have started with a pterodactyl or plesiosaur or something big and threatening that actually existed and worked out from there, rather than starting with a Western dragon and ending up with Terry Wogan.

  4. SI Says:

Oh alright then it is terrible!

But something I have just noticed… and maybe I have been staring at it for too long now. The blonde dude… I don’t think he is wearing leggings. Not that if he did everythign would be alright, but it kinda looks like he is wearing some sort of male mini skirt.

  5. CSA Says:

NIX your argument seems to imply there is no biological explaination for Terry Wogan, yet such a being does exist.

I think even in a fantasy setting there is no reason a 6 limbed lizard couldnt evolve. I think a mutated genome could cause extra limbs. Couldn’t over time that mutated gene become dominant? Ergo, Terry Wogan is a mutant? QED?

The whole concept of dragons in reality it stupid anyway, they’re wings would have to be HUGE to actually fly with the bulk of a western dragon underneath.

…but more importantly… SI… somehow i totally missed that the dude is wearing a mini skirt! Well spotted!

  6. James Lovegrove Says:

Close scrutiny of the full image suggests that Miniskirt Guy may well be sporting a big fat disco ‘tache.

  7. SI Says:

Nice spot! He’s obviously discovered a dragons one weakness, handlebar mustaches!

  8. Adam Roberts Says:

My favourite bit is the Reader’s Digest style ‘[Insert Name Here]‘ way “Xanth” is printed at the top of the cover.

‘A quest for the source of its power threatened to doom the land of” — (a) NOD, (b) ENG, (c) DISNEY or (d) GEOFF HURST IN THE 1966 WORLD CUP FINAL.

  9. Nix Says:

That’s a very sensible decision on their part. It’s not as if that description couldn’t apply to about six million fantasy novels. Turn it upside down (replacing ‘threatens to doom’ with ‘promises to save’) and it applies to another six million, including The Lord of the Rings.

  10. Gadly Says:

Actually, it’s a faithful depiction from the book in terms of components and flightless dragon. So the book may be schlocky, but the painting is merely trying to be accurate!

    lol

I’ve said it before, I’ll probably say it again: if you licked this cover, it would taste like Vegemite.
