He's ok, it's just the after effects of watching Glee.Click for full image

Jen’s Art Direction: A book about telepaths, you say?  You’re blowing my mind.  In fact, that’s just what we need on the cover!  A man with his head exploding!  And if that doesn’t just scream sci-fi, we’ll put him in coveralls and put after-images of him all over the place.  Oh, and emboss it.  All of it.  I want everything to stand out.

Thanks so much to Jen!

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of artI would touch it without protective glovesI have seen worse. Far, far worseInteresting, but I would still read it in publicMiddling: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lamé picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! Ah, Baen, Baen, Baen. Where would we be without you?

It looks like Timothy Zahn himself hated this cover so much he tried to rip his own name off it.

I can’t figure out what the title of this book is. Is it ‘Distant Friends’ or ‘Distant Friends and others’?

I think that guy needs a paracetamol!

Personally I consider this whole shining neon spiralling hairstyle thing very eighties.

  4. Ron Obvious Says:

There are covers of Tera Patrick films with more subtlety.

  5. Nix Says:

It’s actually a book about someone who suffers from devastating migraines and the terrible effect this has on his social life. The visual metaphor for pain and visual distortion is nicely done. I think all the embossing is meant to represent a halo.

(I have never heard of this book before but I used my telepathic powers to read Jen’s mind. And now I have a headache.)

  6. Ron Obvious Says:

Not migraines induced from reading Timothy Zahn’s prose?

  7. CSA Says:

Timothy Zahn first star wars books were amongst the first sci-fi books i read, they were pretty tough to get through to be honest, the book heir to the emipre mentioned in the blurb was the worst out of them all, but i really enjoyed his Conquerors’ Trilogy (not star wars), might even read them again, but it’s been like 10-15 years since i read them…

I wouldnt have read them if they had covers as bad as that one though. It goes without saying that the star wars ones were pretty awful covers too.

I think the most impressive thing about this cover is that the BAEN logo could be accused of be subtle.
