I must go now... my planet needs me.Click for full image

Missie Comments: It’s a little-known fact that when Asimov died, he was days away from sending his own head into space.
Published 1969

Our book will blow your head off!!

  2. THX 1138 Says:

“Wait, I haven’t thought this through – how do I scratch my nose now?!”

  3. Jaouad Says:

That’s a tragic miscalculation if ever I saw one.

  4. Phil Says:

It can’t by Asimov, unless his mutton chops have fallen off due to excessive G forces. It must therefore be either Arthur C. Clarke or the father of Joe 90. Both of whom were scientists.

Notice that no ladies were permitted to appear in this volume, just “the men who make science”. I’d prefer to read a book by people (of any (or no) gender) who DO science, not those who just make it.

  5. A.R.Yngve Says:

    Sequel anthologies were:

    - Great Science Fiction By HAIRDRESSERS

    - Great Science Fiction By POLICEMEN

    - Great Science Fiction By DOOR-TO-DOOR SALESMEN

    - Great Science Fiction By PLUMBERS

  6. A.R.Yngve Says:

“He-he und he! Mein new invention shall make me ze master of ze world! Once mein head goes into orbit, I will hold ze Earth to ransom with my deadly hands of… oh crap.”

  7. Alessandra Kelley Says:

Judging from the suit it’s Tom Wolfe.

  8. Jaouad Says:

Don Ivan Punchatz was the guy who created the original package art for the DOOM video game.

Now I now longer feel guilty about my first thought on seeing this cover: ‘Decapitated guy with torn arteries hanging from his neck.’

  9. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

    Chemistry…is so green

  10. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

Fancy a laugh? Do an image search for Groff Conklin, the editor. It looks like a ‘coming up next on GSS’ advert! :)

  11. Alessandra Kelley Says:

I would also like to point out that the head and the hands are awfully big compared to the suit. The head I can understand, since “scientists” are supposed to be “eggheads” (note: closely related to several, so please recognize irony here), but the hands?

  12. A.R.Yngve Says:

    “Thunderbalds are GO!!”

  13. SI Says:

“HOLY CRAP! Would you look at that… a fire proof suit!!”

  14. Phil Says:

Idle thought: those could be retro-rockets, so the head could be making a descent, aiming to dock with the awaiting shirt collar aperture.

Other idle thought: but for the hands, the suit could be the invisible man (san bandages).

  15. fred Says:

And its companion book “Great Science Fiction by Housewives”. Imaginative tales by the women who make dinner for the men who make science.

  16. A.R.Yngve Says:

Phil: Picture the head-docking sequence with the waltz music from “2001″ playing…
    ;-P

  17. Smith Says:

“Tuesday 15 March. Testing continues with the new Coke recipe. Pleasing taste. Some head launching.”

  18. Smith Says:

“Yeah dude, get down to the lab. Asimov’s cooked up the good stuff and we’re all getting hiiiiighhhh!”

  19. Smith Says:

“And I think it’s gonna be a long long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I’m not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no, I’m a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone”

  20. Tom Noir Says:

At last, a headache cure that really works!

  21. Jane Says:

“Edited, and with an introduction by Groff Conklin”
    Great misplaced commas by scientists!

  22. Phil Says:

Thank god it’s edited. I hate all those unedited books. They just go on and on.

Why aren’t there more people called Groff? Or Conklin?

  23. ocellaris Says:

…did the scientists design the cover, too? :S

  24. Tim Says:

Yikes. Yet another that is actually on my bookshelf. I must seek therapy.

  25. A.R.Yngve Says:

Great Science Fiction By TRANSFORMERS DISGUISED AS SCIENTISTS
