Strangely, this was Pohl’s FIRST Nebula Award winning novel, so the strapline was optimistic (or possibly clairvoyant).
It’s actually a terrific book still (I last re-read it about four years ago), and the cover isn’t a gazillion miles away from interpreting what Pohl describes. In fact, there are WORSE efforts out there – you may recall this one:
Frederik Pohl Man staggered through the unwelcome city streets. His bionic arm struggled to keep his epidermis over his vitals. His almond eyes glanced desperately for help. His defeat by Triangle Man had reduced him to a dun-brown blob of indeterminate shape…
But soon he would be back – bigger, stronger, faster – as Frederick Pohl Man Plus!
