Dark wizards really don't like fluffy hats!Click for full image

Good Show Sir’s Art Direction: How short can you make a man skirt? Well it better just about cover the essentials because I’m sure that’s how a legionnaire went into battle against armoured wizards with comic book red eyes peering out from their helmets.
Published 1988

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of artI would touch it without protective glovesI have seen worse. Far, far worseInteresting, but I would still read it in publicMiddling: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lamé picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! Hmm. Run out of covers again, have we?

    :-)

  4. GSS Admin Says:

@Phil – I thought it wasn’t that good, tombstone title and all that. :P

But we definitely aren’t running out of covers. I opened my inbox today to a deluge not seen since the great flood of MisterBob!

With his secret betrayed by his skirt length, Mars is banished to make a cape look not ridiculous in the least.

Squire: Sir, you forgot your armor!

Knight Fantastic: HAHAH, silly squire. I dont need armor, look at my pecs, my gluts, my dazzling quads!! Now grab me my frilly cape, gap mini-skirt, helm and those garter boots over yonder.

    Squire: Sigh….yes my lord…..

Deleted scenes from the 300 DVD?

  9. Tom Hering Says:

“Banished to do the impossible.” Since when is banishment an appointed task? And what is that impossible task? To attract a young male demographic by teasing them with man butt?

  10. Adam Roberts Says:

Is that the silhouette of a double bass, bottom right?

  11. FeaŕofMusic Says:

We can at least point out the technical failings here. How, for example, does.the palm of Galactus remain shadowed when it is emitting a plasma bolt. And shouldn’t the resulting block by the shield result in sone rather intense light reflected back into the palm. The artist was good enough to resist ting!ing the sword though.

  12. B. Chiclitz Says:

Thanks, @Tom Hering for pointing out the semantic incoherence of the blurb. Since these covers are complex linguistic/visual texts (a semiotician’s wet dream, really), the absurdities of one realm of discourse reverberate through the other; hence the equally delightful visual incoherence @FearofMusic has caught. Great stuff!

  13. Frank Says:

I’m think I’m glad that it’s not just the lady swordfighters going into battle with too much exposed thigh.

  14. fred Says:

To close to the generic renderings of Fingolfin vs Morgoth.

  15. Phil Says:

@GSS Admin: I’m relieved to hear you are still being deluged with covers. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Which reminds me, anyone seen Adam Roberts’ collection ADAM ROBOTS? ;-)

  16. JaunPaul Says:

I’m glad we’re not getting the front view.
