It’s another bank holiday weekend and that can only mean one thing for us here at Good Show Sir! Party time! Or possibly just the cinema and a few beers, which might be a party… to some people.

These covers have been sent in by the very excellent Saxy Stevenson who found them while in Nepal. Hope you enjoy them, as for the published dates… ummm can anyone here read Japanese?

  1. SI Says:

And for the can’t be bothered. That line is translated to:

Sir good show is the best! I apologize for Google, which make wonderful is not using the grammar translation of my doubt!

    Perfect…

  2. Phil Says:

I like cover no. 3: a giant costumed mouse goes about his daily business while two humans regard his planet with envious eyes, and slowly and surely draw their plans against him.

    With apologies to H.G. Wells.

  3. THX 1138 Says:

#1: “Hey, look what I almost stepped in!”

    #2: Dark Helmet’s pet moggy?

#3: “Those sunflower seeds won’t find themselves!”

    #4: Drunk in Spaaaace!

#5: The Love Boat: The Next Generation!

  4. Yurgen Says:

I can’t read Japanese, but I do have strong enough Google-Fu to know that the second one is the twentieth Guin Saga novel “Steelmaiden of Salia” from 1985.

  5. Tom Hering Says:

“I am Great Space Mouse, and I condemn you humans to roll about the galaxy in a giant hamster ball. Mwahaha!”

  6. Tom Hering Says:

“Eeeee! The evil Doctor Kurzweil, who uploaded himself to the walls of Singularity Station, just blew on the back of my neck! Eeeee!”

  7. Joe Says:

    The last one’s a Perry Rhodan. http://homepage2.nifty.com/Tetsutaro/Writer/R/Rhodan001.html

  8. Bibliomancer Says:

What is odd is that I ran that Japanese through Bing Translate and I got:

“aliens anthropomorphism beard-wielding bladed weapons cat people cleavage cloak daemons daggers damsel devil’s dumplings dragons evil evil children explosion fire font problems glow guns horses hunk lasers lizards loincloth magic monsters muscles once you see it planets robots space space ships space suit strange animals swords Ting! unknown artist show sir good wtf”

  9. JC Superstar Says:

@THX 1138 Love the SNL reference for #5.

#4 I’m pretty sure that ape man in the wall is Harry from Harry and the Hendersons

  10. Tom Hering Says:

“Stand where you are, man in green! You may not abandon your human-alien hybrid spawn in the land of the three-eyed, four-armed people! It simply isn’t done.”

  11. FearöfMusic Says:

I have a friend who lives in Osaka. He says Japanese sci-fi enthusiasts are geeky, snarky, pseudo-intellectuals who love to post sarcastic comments about…wait.

“Pseudo-intellectual?” say I,”My Japanese brothers and sisters say you have bottom burp breath.”

  12. Tom Hering Says:

Leopard-head Wingback Armchair Thing awaits his next victim in the gentlemen’s club.

  13. Tom Hering Says:

“Race, Jonny, Dr. Quest! Don’t hook up with that redhead! There’s a Lizard Man hiding in her hair!”

  14. FearöfMusic Says:

@Tom Hering: But what about Haji? Are we throwing him to the leopard people?

  15. Tom Hering Says:

That’s Haji exploding in the lower left corner. He was radicalized in his teens, and grew up to become a suicide bomber.

  16. B. Chiclitz Says:

#3: Build a Better Human Trap and the Universe Will Beat a Path to Your Door!

  17. FearöfMusic Says:

@Tom Hering: Ah yes. I see the fragments of flaming turban now.

  18. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

@Joe: they’re all (but #2) Perry Rhodan novels. Unfortunately, Yurgen’s Google-fu is far greater than my Rhodan-fu.

*goes ‘Aiieee!’ and a moment later flies backwards into a table and a pile of half-eaten food*

  19. prissi Says:

Ok, not too difficult to translate
    1. The “Giant awakes”
    2. “Daughter (of) Seria”
    3. Ice planet burning / being burned or the burnable ice planet
    4. The three person betrayer (sounds rather like a murder mystery … )
    5. Final battle! Wega Star Fortress

  20. David Cowie Says:

Space Mouse is adorable. And I rather like cover number 5.

  21. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

OK, the covers are something like:

    #1: Rise of the Giants

    #3: Star/Planet of Burning Ice

    #4: The Three Traitors

#5: Final Battle! In the Orbit of Vega

  22. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

Goodness! Cover #5 may be the first Good Show in Space!

  23. FearöfMusic Says:

Are all of these books written by ‘western’ authors? Are any written by Japanese writers? Curious about it because none of the humans on the covers appears to be asian, of any ethnic group. Only occidentals go into space? Or perhaps it is some kind of..oh forget it. I never know what to do with myself when my bank is off larking about while I am still forced to work. Tis not fair I say.

  24. Stevie T Says:

@Dead Stuff: No, the first Good Show in Space was this:

    http://www.goodshowsir.co.uk/2012/12/foundation/

  25. Stevie T Says:

    @Tom Hering #15 and FearofUmlaut #17:

You guys made me laugh so hard I think I hurt something….

  26. Stevie T Says:

#1: The alien looks like he’s saying: “Look what your stupid spaceship did to my pet iahggheh!”

#2: “Well he was a big leopard OK? With you know, the sunglasses, inflight casual spacesuit split to the navel, brown beach loafers, the whole bit.”
–If you know where I quoted that from, give yourself 10 nerd (or geek, or fan, whatever you prefer) points!

#3 It’s Hamtaro! In Space!! (and beings that it’s Japanese, it very well could be…)

  27. Leak Says:

@FearöfMusic: number 1 and 3 to 5 are in fact Japanese translations of the world’s biggest serial space opera novel, Perry Rhodan (2698 issues and counting), from the original German issues with custom-made cover images for the Japanese version. The original issues are written by German, Austrian and Swiss writers.

Of course many of the original German covers would also be prime fodder for this site… :D

Also, that furry guy on the 3rd cover is called a “mouse beaver” in German…

  28. Tom Hering Says:

Stevie T @ 25, the quote is spoken by Zaphod and is from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Original Radio Scripts.

  29. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

What? We’re 25 replies in, and nobody’s pointed out the tentacles on the first cover?

    Fine.

‘Look, mate. You’re going to have to bend ALL the way over if you want me to put the iahggheh in!’

  30. FearöfMusic Says:

@Leak: Thank you for answering that question. Unfortunately you have raised a more pressing question in my mind. Where can I get a mouse-beaver? He’s SO cute, he’s precious!

  31. Leak Says:

    Ask, and ye shall receive:P

  32. Jaouad Says:

“MausBieber”? Well, that explains quite a lot, actually…

  33. Jaouad Says:

Also, glad to see that the art director for #2 thought it necessary to put the series’ title in western script, *through* the kanji. One can never have enough Arnold Böcklin muddying things up.

  34. HappyBookwyrm Says:

Okay, I have just two things to say:

    1) SPACE MOUSE! Awwww! Infinite adorable. Maybe he’s the descendant of the Mouse who rode a motorcycle. “The Mouse and the Giant Transwarp Hamster Ball.”

    2) I wish I knew a lot more about Mr. Evil Wall right now. (I hate walls that turn traitor on you.)

  35. FearöfMusic Says:

@Leak: Wündebar! Deine mausbieber, sie sind meine!
    You ROCK Leak!!!

  36. Scott B Says:

To me cover #1 looks like a Star Trek Original Series episode directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

“Scotty, three to beam up. And the doctor better have brushed up on his squidpuppy physiology!”

  37. David Cowie Says:

And speaking of the cuteness of Space Mouse, I was in a natural history museum yesterday, where one of the exhibits was an animal described as “arboreal.” I mis-read this as “adorable.”
“Adorable? It’s not *that* cute … oh, hang on … “
