    Looking through the recipes, I’m glad – really glad – I’m a vegetarian. The only book that could have brought less pleasure into my life would have been Sex Out of This World edited by Piers Anthony “and written by an assortment of science fiction writers recording their favorite techniques for posteriors [sic] without any regard for the immediate consequences whatsoever.”

    Hmm. Let’s see. Diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and bleeding ulcers are all rather long term. Immediate. So, what then, are we talking perhaps things like nausea, diarrhea, projectile vomiting and, say, severe and life threatening allergic reactions to ingredients? Sounds absolutely delightful, let’s just fire up the stove.

    @Rachel J: Now that would make an awesome Ace double. Still wouldn’t buy it though.

    I recommend the ‘Romance Writers Guide to Rebuilding Your Big Block V8′. 2nd edition preferably. Jackie Collins chapter on carburetors is fantastic.

    I’d like to claim Ellison’s recipe as my own just to see how long it takes him to sue me.
    And if one of the recipes doesn’t call for blue phallus I don’t know why one is on the cover.

    Just so you know, this book isn’t merely original, it’s “VERY ORIGINAL.” That must account or the “And”; also perhaps the five distinct fonts on the cover.

    I love the detail of EC Tubb making home-brew: if Earl Dumarest took time out from his swashbuckling to make elderflower wine and swap it with his neighbours, it’d make such a difference to his chances of finding Earth. But now I’m imagining him played by Richard Briers.

    @A.R.Yngwe: you know about the Tiptree Award for SF that challenges gender assumptions being financed by bake sales and a recipe book, ‘The Baking Men Don’t See”, right?

I think it’s a continuation from the top of the page: “Edited by Anne McCaffrey And written by an assortment of science fiction writers recording their favourite recipes for posterity without any regard for the immediate consequences whatsoever…”

    Can’t say it makes a heck of a lot of sense in any case. Writing recipes down is not a particularly high watermark for recklessness.

    @AMartyn—good parse. The blurb writer probably just offered up the copy and the layout person, who, it appears, not only has an unimpressive eye but is also illiterate, just broke it up according to some arcane sense of “design.”

    Of course, there’s plenty of blame to go around for this masterpiece. But hey, damn the consequences! These are recipes that play for keeps!!
