@Proteus: It demonstrates the violence inherit in the system. At any rate, supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
At first glance I thought the red things decorating the frame were eggs but on closer inspection I realised they are probably related to the giant mushroom our hero is mounting. Which would explain. . .everything.
But it’s not all bad! The completely botched, illegible lettering obscures at least some of the painfully inept artwork, and also spares you from being able to read the stomach-churning copy…
The fancy golden border has some fascinating perspective characteristics. Starting at the 3 o’clock position on the cover, it is located behind the trees growing on the spit of land, but as it moves around the border counter-clockwise, when it gets to 6 o’clock, it is in front of the spit of land.
Does it take a hard turn away from the viewer at 5 o’clock, traveling undergound to about 4 o’clock, where it suddenly rises upright to appear again at 3 o’clock?
Also, does the ghostly swordsman/horseman’s cape obscure the border, or does it just feature very convenient cutaways right there? It seems like any study of this scene requires “Infinite Dreams” by Iron Maiden as the accompanying music.
It all looks very cluttered. Did the fight start with somebody saying ‘This book cover isn’t big enough for the four of us’?
Assuming Fang The Gnome is the horseman, the ZZ Top effect is in evidence – the serpent has fangs, the horse has fangs, the other two faces can’t be seen. So Fang The Gnome is the only one who definitely doesn’t have fangs.
Is that guy supposed to be Fang? Because he doesn’t look very gnomish. Maybe the title character isn’t on the cover, despite pretty much everything else in the world being on there.
This is so ridiculously busy that it looks like it was created using the methods employed in the “generic high fantasy cover” blog post we saw a while back.
OK, knight is fighting snaaake, but it appears the Lady of the Lake is fixing to cut off his horse’s leg. Maybe snaaake is her pet? Her Ting! is most impressive.
@Tag Wiz: he’s wearing booties.
@Tor (6) I’d have been disappointed if someone didn’t post that.
@ ARY: All true.
@Ryan: Well-spotted. So the frame is at an angle, possibly non-Euclidean.

If the writing is as crisp and clear as the artwork, readers are in for a real treat.

Why is the submerged swordsperson stabbing the ghostly horse?! Seems a jerk move in my opinion.

@Tor Mented: What are the odds that Dennis has usurped the Lady of the Lake’s position and is the one stabbing the ghost horse?
Because I’d say they’re pretty good.

Hm. Now I’m not seeing most of the cover photos. 🙁Using Safari on my Mac Pro Early 2009 running El Capitan, they’re fine. Firefox with the same computer? Nope.Oh well. There’s a workaround.Edit: Odd. I posted a comment, and the photos are back. Belay my complaints….
