The nightmare comes on smelly cat breath.

Just be glad cats can’t open cans.

    …Yet.

What’s the matter? Cat got your ting?

  5. Lillie Awesome Says:

дверь в плоское пространство, more like.

  6. Bruce A Munro Says:

Evoking the discarded draft of the story in which the hero is accompanied into the future by the murderous ghost of his abandoned cat.

  7. A.R.Yngve Says:

Yuri Gagarin’s first mission almost ended in disaster until he chucked that darned cat into space. The Soviet government covered up the event.

Cool interior illustrations from this edition here:

Also note: “The book was published at the expense of the author of the translation and on his initiative.” So I guess the Heinlein estate shouldn’t be expecting a Russian royalty check.

In Soviet Schrödinger’s paradox, cat checks on you.

  10. B. Chiclitz Says:

I’m struck by the prominence of nostrils—both human and feline—on this cover. Perhaps a specialty of Russian UAI?

  11. Ray P Says:

Solaris would be scarier if this cat showed up in it. “And you, you little sh!thead, you are staying here.”

Is it wrong that all I can think of is Stouffer?

  13. GSS ex-noob Says:

I see Russian UAI is just as bad as the British, American, and French. Something we all have in common. Despite race, color, creed, or nationality, we all get bad sci-fi book covers. And those literate in English can come here to mock them.

This is UGLY. Who thought that angle on the man was a good idea? Had the artist ever seen an actual cat?

The mega-Ting! doesn’t make up for it, artist.

@BC: This guy got highest marks in “Nostril Illustration” at USSR UAI, obviously.

@Tat: Your links have consistently given me a very odd history/suggestion list on YouTube.

@Everyone else: Witty as usual. I laugh more here than at most supposedly funny things. GSS provides more genuine chortles than a year’s worth of sitcoms.

  14. Francis Boyle Says:

In space Ceiling Cat is very confused.

  15. GSS ex-noob Says:

Nah, that’s obviously Basement Cat. He is confused by the lack of gravity ruining his sense of up and down, though.

  16. Raoul Says:

    Astronauts love Tang.
    Cosmonauts love Ting!

  17. Bruce A Munro Says:

Hibernation Pod Checklist #7: have you put the cat out? (In hibernation mode, you will not wake up if cat begins eating you).

  18. Verylatetotheparty Says:

@Bruce: You have just brought a whole new horror to the ending of Alien.
