God, why does he insist on teleporting here with no clothes on.Click for full image

It was my late teens and I was studying hard at some top notch university. Then came the LSD and it was all, floating semi translucent men surrounded by magical orbs in a forest being watched by unicorns. I suppose that has something to do with the world of cats, right?

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! Feels so good!Good Show Sir! (Average: 8.54 out of 10)

    Fantastic cover. But..

‘Return to the world of cats have no lord…’

I am the only one struggling to understand that?

  2. CSA Says:

    Its a top quality cover.
And you’re not the only one struggling… i really cant get my head around the cat thing. The blurb is also pretty funny.

Even the unicorn looks like its confused by the guy there.

  3. Simon Says:

The unicorn’s expression is priceless ‘WTF?’ (actually do unicorns swear?)

And why is the man going swirly blue from the waist down? Is it so that from a passing glance it looks like he’s just wearing jeans? Or is so that we can be profoundly grateful that he’s not gone swirly blue from the waist up . . .

Cats have no Lord being in very slight italics we are presumably expected to know that this was the title to the previous book in the series (and of course Cats have No Lord was SO successful we all know that right?). As opposed to wandering away feeling as if English must be our second language.

Cats Have No Lords, And Accordingly Do Not Stage International Cricket Matches.

So, you’ve got a hole-punch. Its plastic reservoir is full of all the little circles of paper you’ve punched out of the many documents you’ve recently filed into ring-binders. But then you make the mistake of trying to empty it whilst standing over a hot air vent! Oh dear!

  6. SI Says:

Who would call their world, cats have no lord?

But thanks for clearing that up Simon. You haven’t heard of the book, Cats have no lord? It’s the follow up to Dogs have a largely corrupt but economically viable monarchy.

  7. CSA Says:

“Who would call their world, cats have no lord? ”
    Will Shetterly, thats who.

    And SI, you might actually be right;
Wiki says: “Will Sheterly…. best-known for his novel Dogland (1997)”

  8. Karl Says:

Dude is doing his best Matthew McConaughey impression. Cats and shirts have no lord. All the cover needs is Kate Hudson. Best read with “Browned Eyed Girl” playing in the background to complete the rom-com cliche.

  9. Maureen Says:

Cats Have No Lord was a fairly interesting book of the “based on my D&D campaign” sort. In the second book, it turns out that the entire world was really an MMO run by an AI that’s come awake, and we get a totally different take on the situation by knowing that.

And yes, The Hidden Land came out long before .Hack//Sign.

  10. CSA Says:

I would have been really pissed off to read a book only to discover it was a matrix or mmo. I cant imagine how outraged ive have been if i watched Dallas only to discover it was a dream and therefore making it completely null and void.

Not seen Hack//Sign, but i imagine its fairly obvious its a game from the first episode (and the back of the DVD)… rather than watching it for 5-6 hours before realising it doesnt matter.

  11. Tom Noir Says:

Actually CSA, I haven’t watched Hack//Sign either, but given that it’s an anime it may well not explain anything for the first half of the show, by which time viewers will have any number of new questions that will never be answered.

    So, like Lost, basically.

  12. Luc D Says:

    Have tangled lands, will shetterly.

  13. A.R.Yngve Says:

    Those darned Godless Commie cats!

  14. Phil Says:

I always thought the cats’ Lord was called Aslan.

  15. A.R.Yngve Says:

Cats have no lord… they have an anarcho-syndichalist commune!

  16. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

Connecting the dots between two covers that have naught to do with each other.

Have you noticed how many one-offs post about ‘oh, but it’s really, really a scene from the book’? Well, that’s as may be. But should the artist have painted that one scene? Why not any one of the hundreds of other scenes in the book? Really. Did the art director think, ‘This is it! This is the image that not merely best encapsulates the story, but will doubtless generate the interested glances of the unwashed masses!’ I simply can’t believe it.

  17. Rachel J Says:

@Dead Stuff. A sample of covers currently in “Recent Post Comments”

This depicts a scene from the book (give or take minor details):

    And (allegedly) this:

Don’t know about this, but probably (seems the entire series *is* about battling dragons):

  18. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

The poor fellow’s being assaulted by hula hoops. And the unicorn is thinking, ‘Well, that’s all for THAT virgin.’

  19. anon Says:

“Very funny, Scotty, but… at least… it’s… just the shirt… and I’m… in a forest.
This prank… better.. not develop… any further. And… I.. want my shirt back.”

  20. GSS noob Says:

Cats have no lord, but unicorns have a good eye for things to be skeptical about.

  21. Francis Boyle Says:

Clydesdale unicorn, because even in a magical world there’s heavy haulin’ needing to be done.

  22. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

    The friendzone, visualised.

  23. fred Says:

Unicorns! got some really strange nightmares.

  24. THX 1138 Says:

    Photobombs!

  25. JuanPaul Says:

This cover is me, going to my happy place.

  26. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

@JuanPaul returns to the world of Cats Have No Lord!

  27. Tom Noir Says:

What’s the deal with Unicorns! anyway? If you think about it, their obsession with virgins is kinda creepy.

  28. B. Chiclitz Says:

    The Unicorns! thought bubble:

“Hmmmm, hey Wilbur, I think the title should be The Tangled Pants, hyunnh, hyunnh.”

  29. Bibliomancer Says:

Somebody take a photo of the Cats Have No Lord cover. It looks like one of those Taiwanese news cartoon animations.

  30. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

If there’s a teleporter accident and his fingers end up misaligned, does that give him…

    THE TANGLED HANDS

  31. GSS ex-noob Says:

@B’mancer: it does, save for the duller colors and lack of (intentional) funny.
