Why are we out here my faithful steed? To be struck by lightning of course!Click for full image

Women love their horses and I’m pretty sure everyone grows up wanting that pony all their life. So that’s what we’ll give ’em. Except give the horse a certain quality, an almost surprised expression as he stares off into the vast distance. And give the L&D letters of the title a black fill. I can’t see that one back-firing.

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! Feels so good!Good Show Sir! (Average: 5.81 out of 10)

I thought modern cameras were configured to avoid red-eye?

  2. little mi Says:

I love the hair cut that horse has. A bit new romantics meets emo…staring out into the stormy distance. That’s one soulful horse.

  3. SI Says:

Looks like she’s got that belt pretty tight around her waist. Which looks about the size of an arm.

  4. CSA Says:

Ouch. Poor girl, her organs must be crushed by that belt.

And the horse really does look like a depressed emo kid. I think the red-eye is actually contact lenses. I think all animals should wear red contacts, and creepy children too. Creepy children + red eyes = Perfect horror movie

  5. little mi Says:

Even better if they are twins.

  6. SI Says:

    Evil children riding evil horses?

We may be onto a low budget blockbuster here.

  7. James Lovegrove Says:

Let’s accept that the wind is blowing from behind them. That still doesn’t excuse her boofy Linda-Hamilton-in-Terminator-1 hair.

  8. CSA Says:

Nothing excuses that hair cut. But i think you’re onto something with the Terminator reference. It would certainly explain the red eyes. If we could tie in the evil child twins with the emo Teminator horse, i think we could have a blockbuster here.

  9. Adam Roberts Says:

James: you think that’s boofy Linda-Hamilton-in-Terminator-1 hair? I reckon it’s massive curly lead-singer-of-Slade sideburns.

  10. stevetalbert Says:

I don’t think that woman is wearing any pants on the horse. Why does the horse looked drugged up? Why is the wind blowing from the opposite direction of the storm? Why is the book in a rombus shape?? It should have been a pop-up book. and then at the climax, you actually get shocked when you turn the page.

  11. irisclara Says:

I think the horse is cute. It looks like Tintin!

  12. SI Says:

    But… wasn’t tintin… you know… apart from annoying. A redhead?

I’m not sure if I see it irisclara 😛

  13. CSA Says:

@SI close your eyes, now imagine Tintin except he’s black and er… a horse, now give him huge red eyes instead of the wee specks he has, give him a lightning tattoo on the shoulder. He’s also naked. Open your eyes and scroll up, TA-DA, thats exactly what you were thinking!

Is the black Tintin called Tantan? ….Prince Philip told me that one during our weekly Bridge game.

Personally i think the horse looks like emo hitler

  14. SI Says:

@CSA Still not seeing it to be fair. And to ALSO be fair. The last thought I needed this morning was tintin naked.

  15. Deborah Says:

so the cover is wonderfully awful, then Adam, James, SI and CSA make comments that make me cry laughing.

I think stevetalbert’s suggestion of a pop-up book is excellent. combine that with the evil child twins and the Terminator horse and the whole publishing industry will grind to a halt – this book will be so perfect, no one will ever want to write or read another one.
but maybe the rider could lose her mustache before the cover of the pop-up book.

  16. Traci Says:

This is so funny. I was asked by a friend of mine to pose for this bookcover on my horse. I believe the year was 1990. Come on you gotta love my funky 80’s hair, my waist was never that skinny, and my legs were definitely not that thick!! All in all I was very proud of this painting/bookcover. My one and only model job. I must admit it was quite a frightning day. I was on an extremely green broke 3 year old arab mare. The wind was incredibly wild. I put on all this garb and held a sword!! I can’t believe I didn’t get killed this day as all of my clothing whipped in the wind and my horse was spooking to high heaven! I hope you’re all smiling as much as I am right now. That was 22 years ago!!!

  17. SI Says:

Traci! Wow, you’ve jumped up right to the top of my favourite comments 😀

Welcome aboard! Please tell me you got to keep the cloak!

  18. Traci Says:

    Hey SI,
I really wasn’t sure anyone was following this page. It’s been almost 2 yrs since a comment was posted. The only reason I checked it out was because my daughter used the bookcover in a facebook page and I thought how the heck did she find it! Incredible! I’m from the Lake Geneva area home of TSR! And, yes, I’m very flattered that I’m on the top of your favorite comments 🙂 And, no, I wasn’t offered the cloak. I did however recieve a $75 check from TSR for putting my life on the line:) That was a lot of money for me then. What made you check the site out again?

  19. Alessandra Kelley Says:

There’s a little list on the right that shows new posts, wherever they may be. Also a lot of us are fond of some of the earlier covers, or finally think of something funny to say.

This cover’s not truly awful — just it’s so realistically painted that that waist looks very strange. It’s fun to see, though. I went to high school not too far away from there and was a D&D player (a girl geek, for sure), so it brings me back.

  20. Phil Says:

The fontmeister was apparently missing a lower-case A, so he decided to use a backwards German beta S instead. Hoping no one would notice.

It took me two years but I DID notice, I DID!

  21. A.R.Yngve Says:

“Hey, lady, relax will ya! You’re crushing my back with your thighs!”

  22. SI Says:

    Haha Phil very well spotted!

And Alessandra is indeed right! It popped up on the side so I could follow and see what people were saying!

I’m glad you made some money from it! I think my new dream is to appear on a book cover now. They seem to like the photo quality stuff, especially on dark romance covers today. Might need to work on my abs though… *coughs* You know, to make them a bit less amazing. Don’t want to show up the other models.

  23. Stevie T Says:

Its nice to see someone finally tamed Bluecifer…

  24. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

@Phil: Well spotted! And the g looks to be an upside-down a…

So it could be ‘Liatnina’s Dguahter?’

    Hm…

Throuah g Algss Clegrly by Issgc Gsimov

    Hoa-Froa by Edagr Gllen Poe

The Grmgaaedon Rga by Aeorae R. R. Mgrtin

  25. A.R.Yngve Says:

    Don’t miss the sequels:

    -Thunder’s Nephews
    – Rain’s Aunties
    – Sunshine’s Grandpa

  26. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

    Dark Horse

    followed by

    Lightning’s Daughter

    and, continuing up the cover,

    Ominous Clouds

    Illegible Font

    Requisite Blurb

    finally,

Stacks of Other Books Lacking in the Traci Department

  27. GSS noob Says:

I presume the lovely Traci and her confused horse weren’t actually knee-deep in water at the time of posing, or the lovely Traci wouldn’t be here to tell us about it.
