A bit late but we had the pleasure of talking with Ken MacLeod (kenmacleod.blogspot.com) and Adam Roberts (www.adamroberts.com) at the Edinburgh Book festival on Sunday. Very interesting talk of which we could have sat through for hours more. Both jolly nice blokes, who didn’t flinch when asked to sign my copy of Rx For Chaos.
So watch out future authors, you too might be asked to sign the Chaos!

Aaaaaghhh it’s horrible! That guy on the right near the New Model Army book – who’s he meant to be? Elric?!
And where’s the type? Odd format too.
Oh hang on, NOT a cover you say . . .

Can’t wait for you to get some more signatures for the Chaos!

I’ll have you know that’s me after two and a half weeks of fierce South of France sunshine! That’s tanned, that is! Elric, indeed.
I think we make a lovely looking couple, actually.

It was a very enjoyable talk. Would definately go again if they somehow invite you back.
While waiting for the talk to begin, “Magic Dance” by Bowie started played on the speakers. I was VERY dissapointed that Ken and Adam didn’t dance their way to the stage.

It was a jolly interesting talk which ended our day out in Edinburgh very nicely!
And the Good Show Sir chaps are pleasant blokes too.
Although, I did look up some of the Baen maniacs later, which has left me pretty damaged. That Tom Kratman is absolutely bashit insane.
Anyway, Good Show to Adam and Ken and to you too. 🙂

Rich, we’ve been down that Baen road with Tom Kratman already. I think its just one of those political differances between UK and USA scifi. Strangely remember Adam did a very short interview on TV about it, aswell as mentioning it during the talk on Sunday.
The original Tom Kratman thread, incase you’ve not seen it: http://www.goodshowsir.co.uk/2009/12/die-wacht-am-rhein/ I think he makes his points very well and even though we disagree politically I think he seemed like quite a nice bloke.

Should read ‘assessment above is a fair one!’
Cheers!

I’d reply in detail, Richard, but I’m too busy at the moment fingerpainting on the walls with my own feces.
Ahem.

Hey, Tom… That’s fine, provided you remember to wash your hands before you prepare your dinner.
Seriously though, as per CSA’s comment above, I do realise that the political landscape of the US differs hugely from that of the UK and this is likely to be reflected in the type of SF that each country produces.
With my own disgusting lefty views, I’m probably unlikely to be in your core readership. So there’s no great loss to you there! 🙂
I do feel that I should apologise for my ill-considered use of the phrase “batshit insane.” It was bashed out with little thought, and really wasn’t intended to be offensive in any way (believe me, it has been many years since I have had even the tiniest inkling of the possibility of thinking about engaging in any sort of flaming).
More accurately what I was driving at, in my own lazily inarticulate way, was that having read some information about Tom Kratman’s books, I find that much of the choice of subject matter and political bent doesn’t sit easily with my own inclinations.
So, once again, I do apologise if my initial comment seemed to be more aggressive in tone than was my intention. No offence was intended!
All the best.

At first I was thinking that Kratman’s name reminded me of the 90s one ‘hit’ wonder Scatman John… whose ‘hit’ was “I’m A Scatman”. Now we know that Tom does indeed have a penchant for playing with his own feces, perhaps he was the inspiration behind the song? If so, he should admit it. It’s almost like waiting to be told that it was definitely Warren Beatty behind “You’re So Vain” but not quite as stomach churning.

Eh? Hearty shrug. Don’t worry about it. If I lacked a sense of humor I’d have given up on this crap long ago.
On the other hand, I _do_ worry about the charge of insanity being tossed around with such gleeful abandon by both right and left. It isn’t the tossing around of the charge that disturbs me so much, though, as the truth behind it. Truth? Oh, yes. In good part right and left _have_ become insane to each other, sharing few or no concepts or values, hence incapable of communication, and with no room for men of good conscience to differ. Perhaps worse, at the extremes, they _feed_ each other’s insanity. It’s dangerous; civil war levels of dangerous.

It wasn’t Warren Beatty, actually, it was…sorry, Carly, for letting the cat out of the bag…me.
Ahem.
