Real men wear loincloths.

Turns out the artwork was indeed drawn during the 60’s!

    Here’s the original Dell cover:

They removed all the fun stuff for this version!

Eureka! I’ve found the answer! The reason why so many book covers are made to *deter* people from buying books…

The Great Conspiracy Theory of Publishing:

Publishing exists for the purpose of circulating pulp, in other words to support the paper-mill industry. Consequently, it is in the interest of paper mills that books do not remain in readers’ hands for a long time — because finger grease spoils the quality of the pulp.

This will lead to a deterioration of cover art — soon we’ll see covers made to make you feel physically ill, with pictures of feces and open sewers.

Logically, we should expect books to be recycled at a faster and faster pace… eventually leading to a streamlined system where books are printed with utterly discouraging covers (if any), shipped to a few giant book warehouses, then immediately shipped back to the paper mill for recycling, and so on.

The original cover is better, how can you top a jellyfish gondolier?

  4. Evad Says:

His loincloth is shifting a bit there.
It looks more like a loin apron. He also has the Charlton Heston – Ben Hur / Moses era look.

in the future, topstick technology has seriously improved

    Machiste!

  7. THX 1138 Says:

Who would have thought that Kurt Vonnegut had written the novel Fire Maidens from Outer Space was based on?

  8. A.R.Yngve Says:

“Who would have thought that Kurt Vonnegut had written the novel Fire Maidens from Outer Space was based on?”

Vonnegut was sorely disappointed when he found out that “Fire Maidens from Outer Space” wasn’t going to be directed by Stanley Kubrick.

    “And so it goes…”

This is the cover that was on my copy of Sirens of Titan (which I loved)! I never understood who the winged guy balancing on the giant egg was supposed to be.

  11. Tom Noir Says:

*resists urge to adjust the loincloth*

  12. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

    It says ‘L A U R E L’, but from here it looks ‘P U R P L E’.

  13. Emster Says:

Could not resist clicking on the Random Terrible Cover, and ended up here.

Artwork reminds me of every big-haired, scantily clad love interest of Captain Kirk, on arguably the best/cheesiest (American) sf tv show ever! (Had to make a small edit there, because Dr. Who blows everything else out of the water, Amen.)

  14. JJYoyo Says:

@Emster: I think you’re on to something. This looks like an earlier draft of the Star Trek TOS episode named “Who Mourns for Barbarella?”

  15. GSS ex-noob Says:

I see why the woman at the bottom (heh) is sitting down reading. Even standing, it would be tough to walk with that giant cape. Is she looking up at the winged guy, the posing bimbos, or suffering from a neck injury?

  16. Ryan Says:

That guy will wish he had a heavier modesty curtain when he turns around and sees The Portal Into Nubility.

  17. GSS ex-noob Says:

@Ryan: Maybe not — they’re Sirens, after all, thus might be pleased to get that reaction.
