Don Comments: In the Future
- Your basketball shoes will be shiny.
- Your garage will have lots of random gages and tubes on its walls.
- “Dead Gopher with Habanero” will be a popular flavor of cat food, judging by the expressions of this guy and his cat respectively.

Many thanks to Don!

Not bad really! Kinda cool actually!
Is that a rocket coming out of a laptop on the bottom left?

I also like to think there is someone off to the side saying:
“In 50 years… DIS AR TEH HOW THEY MAK KATS TALK”

There’s no denying the man on the cover seems offended by some cat-related odor…
…but surely in the future, atomic science has eliminated such problems!

Somebody’s cut the cat’s jugular! See, his lifeblood streams from him! No wonder he looks so unhappy!
Actually, I approve.

Also noteworthy that there’s no sign of the 12-year-old girl who is the adult protagonist’s love interest…

The cat has the tail of a beaver!
I think this may be a reverse angle on this scene:

Is it Heinlein or Rudyard Kipling? That’s not a cat, it’s Rikki Tikki Tavi! The touching futuristic story of a boy and his space mongoose. Not pictured is the robotic cobra with the laser beam eyes.

“Oh Go no the cover is starting to crack the cracks are coming closer!!”

Belatedly, I find that the artist on this one was Mel Hunter.
@AikoAiko: That, I would read.

“On the telly… oh no… it’s Judge Judy! Good God, no!!”

Given most of Heinlein’s early works, this cover probably accurately describes the book.

In the future, it will resemble the 1950s.
And you will be afraid of the CAT!
And the cat will be afraid of everything!

This is actually one of the better 50s covers. If I remember correctly they are reacting to a nuclear strike.

Bob had developed a sudden, overwhelming fear of his forearm hairs.

The artist clearly knows nothing about cats. That thing would trip the guy then run to save it’s own whiskers.

@JuanPaul: Agreed. Also, IIRC, the cat is an unneutered male, which means its brain is entirely consumed by food and looking for lady cats, and the guy’s covering his nose b/c cat is pissing on everything.
Unless it’s a mongoose. It looks like one of those medieval drawings of animals done by an artist who’d never seen the critter but only heard 4th-hand descriptions.
