There are no skateboards, blonde girls, rainbow dragons, Valley girl fashions, or palm trees. There is, however, a passing mention of cats.

Rowena is usually a whole lot better than this. This cover looks phoned in. It looks like it was meant for a whole different book, or was just something lying around the artist had been playing with. If it weren’t for the girl (well-painted and in Rowena’s distinctive style), I wouldn’t have thought it her artwork.
I wonder if it’s like Rubens’ paintings, like she did the figure and someone else put in the rest of it.

At some point there must have been a decision made by the artistic community to completely disregard what skateboards and guitars actually look like (there aren’t any guitars on this cover, but I digress) and just draw a general vague idea of what one might possibly look like if it was described to you via telegram.

It’s a fortunate thing her house is at the top of a hill, and she can skateboard down from it. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be any drama in this picture.

I don’t care if that’s a dragon or a magical lizard or whatever – there is no way both it AND the girl can balance on a skateboard in that pose.

DSwBT@17 just reminded me of a kids’ story by the marvellous Margaret Mahy called “The Downhill Crocodile Whizz”, in which a crocodile does almost exactly that.
