Published in Canada! Bah! No wonder... even the brain is naked!Click for full image

Frank Comments: Good thing that fern was handy, else the publisher would have had to get really blatant with that maple leaf. All the electronic equipment out among the foliage is worrisome too. I’ve seen what happens when that sort of thing is left in a damp environment and it’s not good for continued operation.

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! Are Adam and Eve about to be crushed by the falling brain, Monty Python descending foot style?

  2. kamo Says:

    “in the manner of”?

As for the handy fern, well, that butterfly might have been even worse than any maple leaf…

  3. Tom Noir Says:

Ah, the seventies: when men were men, women were women, and giant brains were giant brains.

  4. SI Says:

“The one place you choose to make love… and it has to be full of giant animals, computers and a floating brain! Shesssh.”

  5. A.R.Yngve Says:

“In the manner of 2001 and Andromeda Strain — just as interminably slow, self-important and sterile!”

  6. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

‘Well, we told two different artists that they could design the cover. What should we do now?’

  7. Jaouad Says:

In the future, your home stereo system will be artfully concealed behind flower-butterfly-nude-brain wallpaper.

  8. Pat Says:

That is a palm, not a fern. Where her five daughters are, I don’t know

  9. Tom Noir Says:

I’m glad to see brains are still a turn on for some girls.

  10. FearofMusic Says:

Fifty shades of grey matter…intellectual sado-masochism. Just say the safe word if your brain begins to hurt from all the potential scenarios we can think of..

    From Wikipaedia:

‘World War III has devastated most of the world, but life is still good for the lucky (and rich) few hundred persons who had their brains preserved in an automated conservatory. Although they have no bodies to move around with, they are free to mentally visit any of the other residents, and engage in all the emotional, intellectual and (pseudo-) sexual congress that they desire.’

The cover makes more sense, though I”m not sure I’d read it in public.

  12. Frank Says:

I read it in private. I suppose I don’t have much shame, I’m admitting that here.

“In the manner of” would seem to mean “story that could be made into a script”. I got that feeling from it.

    Wind slowly baby…

  14. Phil Says:

Looks like the book’s owner had a few stickers lying around, so they stuck them semi-randomly onto the cover. Let’s see: a brain… that can go here; butterfly…here; …

  15. Tom Noir Says:

The original inspiration for James Cameron’s “Avatar”.

  16. A.R.Yngve Says:

I love the little maple leaf with the text “Published in Canada”.
How would that work in other countries…?
MEXICO: A sombrero riddled with bullet-holes and the text “Publidad y Mexico.”
SWEDEN: A Volvo and the text “Publicerad i Sverige, Ja!”
RUSSIA: A black bear growling the words in Cyrillic.

  17. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

    @AR:
IRELAND: A shamrock fighting itself, and the English text overlain on the Gaelic.
USA: An eagle in silhouette, and the text ‘COUPON INSIDE.’
DPRK: A perfectly nice tiger and ‘이 책은 한국에서 출판되었다.’. But the rest of the cover is actually falling off the book inside of the shrink wrap.

  18. A.R.Yngve Says:

“So, E.L., you have a new novel for us?”
“That’s right, and oh my, did my inner goddess strike gold this time! You’re gonna love this!”
    “Shoot.”
“The entire plot of FIFTY SHADES, retold from the point-of-view of Christian Grey!”
    “Err… um… but why?”
“What?? Isn’t that obvious? Because GREY MATTERS!”
