Tom Noir Comments: Nothing screams ‘good book’ like the phrase ‘Coupon Inside!’
Published 2006

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! CWolf CWho CRules!

I hope that coupon can be redeemed for a packet of ibuprofen.

  2. A.R.Yngve Says:

Everyone knows Buffy fans are mad about coupon collecting!

  3. A.R.Yngve Says:

I liked it better when books came with a free toy inside….

  4. THX 1138 Says:

That’s Buffy Sainte Marie fans. Well, he is blue and he looks like a soldier.

  5. Matt Says:

I think I saw that title font last used in every early ’90s CRPG.

  6. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

That dragon’s wearing lipstick…I didn’t think dragons had proper lips.

  7. Dave Van Domelen Says:

No matter how weird a Baen cover is, it’s always honest…so you know there’s a coupon inside. Other publishers might not actually have a coupon, having just grabbed some weird stock cover.

  8. L.B. Says:

@THX1138: Nice Buffy reference! I actually have that song! 😀

  9. Bibliomancer Says:

That’s an odd looking phlegm-covered hairball that the dragon coughed up. Must be that Wolf fellow.

  10. The Tag Wizard Says:

@Matt, right on the button! Maybe it’s an Interplay coupon inside the book..

  11. Tom Hering Says:

So you have to buy the book to send in the coupon, which gets you a picture of what the naked girl between the man and the dragon looks like when she’s not transparent, and doesn’t have her back turned. That’s marketing!

  12. FÍarÜfMßsic Says:

@Jaouad: I don’t think cWen Spencer would take kindly to your mockery. Is cWen a male or female name though? Is that Welsh or something?

  13. Jaouad Says:

    @FÍar: I suspect it’s short for Cwendolyn.

  14. Tom Noir Says:

I’m quite curious about the evolutionary process that looked at a giant, fire-breathing flying lizard and decided it needed spikes on its face.

  15. fred Says:

‘There were some mistakes that “Oops” just didn’t cover.’
The first line of the book excerpt couldn’t be more appropriate for a BAEN cover.

  16. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

    @Tom: sexual selection, maybe?

‘Dude, check out the spikes on HER face!’
‘Sweet! It’s like the beautifully dangerous and dangerously beautiful all rolled up into one!’

  17. David Cowie Says:

Seems to be missing the “Once you see it” tag.

Speaking of blue and orange, has anyone seen “Pacific Rim”? If the trails are to be relied upon, it doesn’t have any other colours.

  18. FÍarÜfMßsic Says:

@Dead Stuff WBT:You must hang with an interesting crowd.

  19. B. Chiclitz Says:

Check out the masterful use of perspective on that right arm! Looks like a tiny T-Rex appendage jammed onto his shoulder, with little scarecrow fingers. Stark contrast with the buff and manly left arm grasping the ridiculously over-engineered sword. Oh Baen, thou art the best—with coupons too!

  20. The Tag Wizard Says:

Thanks DC. Was previously viewing on a different display and it was less orange and blue than it was brown and off-brown.

  21. Lionrock Says:

What’s disappointing is the lack of any wolves, wolfmen, dogmen or anything else lupine or canine , when with a title like that I’d be hoping for a wolf with a crown.

They could have embossed the crown, done multiple tings on it and everything.

Instead its a dragon wearing lippy, and a deformed bloke covered in glowing blueish goo.

    Thumbs down, Baen.

  22. Kripslod Says:

@ B. Chiclitz Thank you for saving me the embarrassment of asking our learned friends who they thought that arm belonged to. At first glance I mistook the gelatinous being’s more chromatic left leg for Shemp’s right arm.

I still need to ask: Does the scene depicted happen in a paint store? And why would a paint store have on hand a director’s chair with in-flight instructions printed on the back?

  23. Phil Says:

Ah yes, our family loves to get together and play a game of WOLF WHO.

The only trouble is that we always end up arguing over the proper way to play it. This Christmas our playing of WOLF WHO will be much more harmonious, now that we have this book with all the rules in it.

    Thanks, cWen Spencer!

  24. Kristina Says:

The sequel’s cover is even worse (http://www.amazon.com/Elfhome-Wen-Spencer/dp/1451639120/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1379365966&sr=8-1&keywords=elfhome). It literally has nothing to do with anything in the book. What’s really tragic, though, is that it’s a great series, one of the few I’ve ever bought full price (I work in a library…used and free books are more my speed).

  25. dpn Says:

Buffy fans should find a lot to like…but they won’t.

  26. Tom Noir Says:

Oh my. Somebody hurry up and submit the cover for Elfhome!!!

  27. Jerk of all Trades Says:

I doubt that blurb was intended as a compliment.

  28. A.R.Yngve Says:

Collect all 5 coupons and get a FREE knee in the groin from the editor!

  29. Anti-Sceptic Says:

Other than the blurb and the coupon advertisement, I think this is actually quite a cool cover…I don’t think it meets the standards of GSS.

  30. A.R.Yngve Says:

“FREE Heroin Dose Inside! (To ease the pain of reading.)”

  31. B. Chiclitz Says:

Can we hook him up with Kalix? His arms are as weird as hers, and the drug-discount coupon should provide an instant bonding mechanism for them!

  32. A.R.Yngve Says:

“Buffy” fans?? Oh, sorry! I meant “BULLY fans”…

  33. Ken Shinn Says:

” Nothing screams ‘good book’ like the phrase ‘Coupon Inside!’”

Except, perhaps, “Buffy fans should find a lot to like”. Oh dear.

  34. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

I saw this one at the bookstore today. To my dismay, the hardcover edition doesn’t advertise a coupon inside. I wonder why not…?

  35. Lars of Mars Says:

I’m not sure where anyone is seeing a director’s chair in the cover image, but domestic partner has worked in paint and wallpaper stores for the last 40 years or so, and if they had directors chair, they would need in-flight instructions!

  36. fred Says:

Hi-res cover minus the coupon shuriken, because Buffy fans love screwdrivers.

  37. GSS ex-noob Says:

Y’all, she just put out the 6th of this series a year ago.
