No matter how weird a Baen cover is, it’s always honest…so you know there’s a coupon inside. Other publishers might not actually have a coupon, having just grabbed some weird stock cover.
So you have to buy the book to send in the coupon, which gets you a picture of what the naked girl between the man and the dragon looks like when she’s not transparent, and doesn’t have her back turned. That’s marketing!
‘There were some mistakes that ââŹĹOopsââŹÂ just didnââŹâ˘t cover.’
The first line of the book excerpt couldn’t be more appropriate for a BAEN cover. http://www.wenspencer.com/wolf-who-rules/
Check out the masterful use of perspective on that right arm! Looks like a tiny T-Rex appendage jammed onto his shoulder, with little scarecrow fingers. Stark contrast with the buff and manly left arm grasping the ridiculously over-engineered sword. Oh Baen, thou art the bestââŹâwith coupons too!
What’s disappointing is the lack of any wolves, wolfmen, dogmen or anything else lupine or canine , when with a title like that I’d be hoping for a wolf with a crown.
They could have embossed the crown, done multiple tings on it and everything.
Instead its a dragon wearing lippy, and a deformed bloke covered in glowing blueish goo.
@ B. Chiclitz Thank you for saving me the embarrassment of asking our learned friends who they thought that arm belonged to. At first glance I mistook the gelatinous being’s more chromatic left leg for Shemp’s right arm.
I still need to ask: Does the scene depicted happen in a paint store? And why would a paint store have on hand a director’s chair with in-flight instructions printed on the back?
Ah yes, our family loves to get together and play a game of WOLF WHO.
The only trouble is that we always end up arguing over the proper way to play it. This Christmas our playing of WOLF WHO will be much more harmonious, now that we have this book with all the rules in it.
Iâm not sure where anyone is seeing a directorâs chair in the cover image, but domestic partner has worked in paint and wallpaper stores for the last 40 years or so, and if they had directors chair, they would need in-flight instructions!

CWolf CWho CRules!
I hope that coupon can be redeemed for a packet of ibuprofen.
September 16th, 2013 at 11:05 am
Everyone knows Buffy fans are mad about coupon collecting!
September 16th, 2013 at 11:05 am
I liked it better when books came with a free toy inside….
September 16th, 2013 at 11:05 am
That’s Buffy Sainte Marie fans. Well, he is blue and he looks like a soldier.
September 16th, 2013 at 11:33 am
I think I saw that title font last used in every early ’90s CRPG.
September 16th, 2013 at 11:58 am
That dragon’s wearing lipstick…I didn’t think dragons had proper lips.

@THX1138: Nice Buffy reference! I actually have that song! đ
September 16th, 2013 at 12:56 pm
That’s an odd looking phlegm-covered hairball that the dragon coughed up. Must be that Wolf fellow.
September 16th, 2013 at 2:00 pm
@Matt, right on the button! Maybe it’s an Interplay coupon inside the book..

@Jaouad: I don’t think cWen Spencer would take kindly to your mockery. Is cWen a male or female name though? Is that Welsh or something?
September 16th, 2013 at 3:23 pm
@FĂÂŤar: I suspect it’s short for Cwendolyn.

I’m quite curious about the evolutionary process that looked at a giant, fire-breathing flying lizard and decided it needed spikes on its face.

@Tom: sexual selection, maybe?
‘Dude, check out the spikes on HER face!’
‘Sweet! It’s like the beautifully dangerous and dangerously beautiful all rolled up into one!’

Seems to be missing the “Once you see it” tag.
Speaking of blue and orange, has anyone seen “Pacific Rim”? If the trails are to be relied upon, it doesn’t have any other colours.

@Dead Stuff WBT:You must hang with an interesting crowd.

Thanks DC. Was previously viewing on a different display and it was less orange and blue than it was brown and off-brown.

The sequel’s cover is even worse (http://www.amazon.com/Elfhome-Wen-Spencer/dp/1451639120/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1379365966&sr=8-1&keywords=elfhome). It literally has nothing to do with anything in the book. What’s really tragic, though, is that it’s a great series, one of the few I’ve ever bought full price (I work in a library…used and free books are more my speed).
September 17th, 2013 at 1:11 am
Buffy fans should find a lot to like…but they won’t.
September 17th, 2013 at 1:16 pm
Oh my. Somebody hurry up and submit the cover for Elfhome!!!
September 18th, 2013 at 12:54 am
I doubt that blurb was intended as a compliment.

Collect all 5 coupons and get a FREE knee in the groin from the editor!

Other than the blurb and the coupon advertisement, I think this is actually quite a cool cover…I don’t think it meets the standards of GSS.

“FREE Heroin Dose Inside! (To ease the pain of reading.)”

Can we hook him up with Kalix? His arms are as weird as hers, and the drug-discount coupon should provide an instant bonding mechanism for them!
May 28th, 2014 at 9:35 am
“Buffy” fans?? Oh, sorry! I meant “BULLY fans”…

” Nothing screams ââŹËgood bookââŹâ˘ like the phrase ââŹËCoupon Inside!ââŹâ˘”
Except, perhaps, “Buffy fans should find a lot to like”. Oh dear.

I saw this one at the bookstore today. To my dismay, the hardcover edition doesn’t advertise a coupon inside. I wonder why not…?

Hi-res cover minus the coupon shuriken, because Buffy fans love screwdrivers.
