Daniel Comments: Bought this gem in an second-hand bookshop last year. I was slightly embarrassed taking it up to the counter. It’s rubbish on a number of levels: it’s a literally awful bit of artwork; it’s artwork that bears pretty much no relation to the story; and said story is a sombre dystopian yarn by Christopher Priest, a renowned purveyor of genre-crossing, award-winning novels that have more recently been reprinted by Gollanz with classy covers.

Good Show Sir’s Art Direction: Look, you can have an albino psychic in a bloody space capsule carried around by bird wings for all I care. The book mentions a leotard… so whatever you have on there… make sure it’s in one!

Scot’s Art Direction: For this one we’re going dystopian agony. So, nuclear explosion! And a prison wall with people falling from it to their deaths, but get this, the wall is also a screaming face! With an eyeball being stabbed by a needle! That’s the stuff.

Glen Comments: It’s a naked man, holding a ray gun, being chased by dogs controlled by evil alien parasites from Titan, which agrees with the plot of Heinlein’s book. But why the red trilby hat? You would think that boots be more useful than a red hat, if you’re in an unclothed state on a hillside…

Art Direction: We need something that really gets across the feeling of time travel. So, in other words I mean a naked gladiator takes on a Boeing 737. And by naked I just having him at some strange angle so we can’t see his bum crack or giblets. I know, I’m no fun.

Bookworm Bas Comments: A 1978 PAN edition. I like the play on words with the title submitting ‘sex’ for ‘things’ in reference to H.G.Wells. I also like the artwork. After all who doesn’t like naked women? No relation to any of the stories of course. At least I don’t recall any flying platform jetting away from a mountain range while a nude women, her decency protected only by her exceptionally long brunette hair, is overcome with emotion. Still I bet they sold a few and I reckon the hair extensions were painted in later (which is a shame I think).
Not bad short stories Anne McCaffrey and Hilary Bailey in there as well to represent women. But also John Sladek, A.K.Jorgensson, Thomas Disch and Douglas Hill in addition to those on the front cover.
Epic! Thanks to Bookworm Bas!

Phils Art Direction: It contains Ellison’s famous story, “A Boy and his Dog.” So let’s have a boy with his dog, but don’t make the boy too boyish and keep the dog cat-like.

Giles Comments: I love the Taltos novels, but these covers actually stopped me buying the books several times – they’re so cheesy. True, the artist gets some credit for getting the jhereg (the winged reptile) approximately right, but that doesn’t really offset the general awfulness.
Tache-tastic! Thanks to Giles!
