First thought: Saberhagen was already a big name by 1984 — why does he need intros from Niven and Zelazny? Why does any paperback fantasy need TWO intros?
The cover damage makes it look like his teat shield is attracting or emitting lightning. And no one on the cover is looking at anyone or anything else.
The woman in blue and the little dude in armor at the bottom right must be important to the story, since they get double billing as Giant Floating Heads. Meanwhile, Alphonse quietly continues to battle were-bears in the middle of a fire.
@Bruce: Looks more like the were-bear is exiting stage left* with his weaponry.. And/or gesturing that he caught a fish “this big”. Alphonse seems to have no idea about anything; too busy modeling.
@Toby: excellent find! It’s awful. Both mediocre in composition and provides no clue to the actual plot…
I see… a Mad Max wannabe, knight’s quest for werebear wrasslin’, holy helmet magic stuff and some babe who serves no purpose other than cover decoration because her boyfriend was the artist…
This artwork looks liike the stuff you got in the serals in ‘Woman’s Realm’ c. 1972. I speak from long experience of waiting in dentists’ offices or opticians’ receptions and of having haircuts when sat on a plank over the arms of the barber’s chair.

Are you also getting “Fashion Model” vibes from this cover?
As if Epic Fantasy Land had a mail-order catalog called “HROTHGAR’S SPRING COLLECTION.”

Well, somewhere out there, there’s cyborg lactation porn because that’s what this makes me think of and rule 34.
