Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! I dunno, but I find it somehow inappropriate to use as the cover for a collection of SF by women a fashion photo which was originally captioned as

    “The Galactic Girl makes the sun scene in suits that are simply Sam. Navy blue knit after-swim suit zips all the way down the back, beautifully moulding the bird. By Bess Art.”

    http://devorahmacdonald.blogspot.com/2011/07/harpers-bazaar-april-1965-he-most.html

    (I just get an air of _condescension_ from stuff like that)

  2. Tor Mented Says:

    Stop trying to make Sam happen. It’s not going to happen.

  3. fred Says:

    Glen or Glenda?

  4. Tat Wood Says:

    Wow! The 1970s are going to be AMAZING!

    (@Bruce: 2018 was around the time the Tiptree Award changed to Otherwise but retained the ironic coronation and ‘Space Babe’ logo. https://otherwiseaward.org/ Maybe this cover was a sardonic reclaiming of dated iconography. Or just cheap and lazy.)

    Outtake from a Virginia Slims ad shoot for Omni Magazine

  6. NomadUK Says:

    Bruce@1: Actually, you’ve got the caption for the photo above it. Here’s the correct one:-

    ‘Look-of-the-future knicker jumpsuit, celestially white as the Milky Way, zips up front, stretching to hug the bug. By Loomtogs. Shades, to keep the sun out of your great big beautiful eyes by Riviera. Capezio Moonsilver tights. Space clogs by Bernardo.’

    Not sure it’s much better, of course. But I suppose ridiculous outfits demand ridiculous descriptions.

  7. NomadUK Says:

    MARS NEEDS WOMEN!

  8. B. Chiclitz Says:

    “Love those space clogs, dahling. Perfect for doing the Mars cafĂ© scene.”

  9. Emster Says:

    @Tat – I would have preferred the Space Babe logo, it’s cool. This cover would have been cool if the photo was of one of the authors modelling “back in the day”.

    In spite of my growliness about this cover, Volumes 1 & 2 are going on my reading wish list (and if this is merely a dust jacket, buh-bye!), so thanks GSS for the intro.

  10. Francis Boyle Says:

    Its a good thing that the crop on the cover is a little more generous than the one shown in the link. Otherwise I might be tempted to think Richard Avedon didn’t know how to photograph feet. (The cropping of the left foot still annoys me though. I mean, however ridiculous the outfit, Avedon was a master and they’ve gone and spoiled a great image.)

  11. Tor Mented Says:

    Feet are hard to crop?

  12. A. R. Yngve Says:

    “All rise for Bright Helmet!”
    [Sinister marching band plays, Bright Helmet approaches camera, tears off fishbowl helmet…]
    “I can’t breathe in this thing!!”

  13. GSS ex-noob Says:

    If, indeed, the future is female, the women aren’t about to put up with that sort of garb. Even the bored models.

    Bad Show, Library of America! Particularly given the info @Bruce gave in #1.

    Sure. Nothing says “respect for pulp-era women” like slapping a friggin’ Richard Avedon couture photo on it, which is captioned: “Look-of-the-future knicker jumpsuit…”

    *checks date* Thank Goddess UKLG was dead before this came out. Her remarks would have been VERY tart and cogent.

    I can’t help but think how really uncomfortable this would have been. All-artificial fiber knicker (???) jumpsuit (ugh), shiny tights under it (and probably no underclothes at all), plastic clogs over the tights, plastic helmet, on a bright clear day. Plus standing in an odd position. I guess she’s lucky she got the sunglasses so at least she didn’t suffer eye damage (either from the light or from rolling them).

    @B’man: GSS!

    @Emster: Great collection, unworthy cover.

    @Tat: The Space Babe is still pretty neat. This was cheap and lazy. I am not familiar with the Otherwise crowning, but I have witnessed several Astounding (formerly Campbell) winners wearing the tiara. Which has grown and is quite sparkly.

  14. Max Bathroom Says:

    @Tor Mented
    Feet are very hard to crop: they’re full of small delicate bones and have none of the padding from fat and muscle that the bum does.
