Brain Face wasn't exactly popular on CBEEBIES.Click for full image

Art Direction: A giant circular brain, with eyes I might add, in some sort of… drill vice! There’s no way it could look like a giant eyed cookie or strange bondage moon face. Right?
Published 1979

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! Roger Hargreaves encountered difficulties when he tried to branch-out his ‘Mr Men’ stories into the adult market.

I, for one, welcome our new porridge overlords.

George Melies must be turning in his grave (http://electricityandlust.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/george-melies.jpg)

…along with the presumably late Groff Conklin.

Oh my. This was an excellent anthology. I remember reading and rereading it. I read a lot of anthologies around then, however, and they’ve all turned into one great amorphous collection in my memory, so I’m not sure what was in it now. It included “Unit,” I’m fairly sure, but I’m vague beyond that. I think it was novellas rather than short stories.

The thing about the ‘seventies in particular was that publishers would routinely put bizarre covers on their SFF and, because everybody did it, it wasn’t a big deal. I did think at the time that it was fair enough that the brain sphere looked so surprised under the circumstances.

  5. SI Says:

So.. depiction of a future fascist government forcing your brain to be, like the man?

OR… the actual brain of all sci-fi writers…

This is a good opportunity to flag up the excellent Contento Index to SF Anthologies. Here’s the entry for this book, but the whole site is worth exploring if it helps resolves that “great amorphous collection” in your mind!

With that screw going through his brain, I don’t think it’s possible he has even one more tomorrow.

Looks like Heston Blumenthal has gone too far this time! “It comes in this special holder and you eat it with this special drill…”

    THEY SAVED PETER KING’S BRAIN
    (And Regretted It)

  13. A.R.Yngve Says:

OK, sorry, I apologize for my previous comment — of course Peter King (R) has no brain.

  14. Carolyn B Says:

I thought it was a sentient crumpet at first glance….hmmm.. that would be a good name for a band…

  19. Francis Boyle Says:

The more I stare at it the more I’m convinced that Mr Coverbrain is one of those images made up entirely of naked women. I can’t quite place the nipples yet but better put space on standby.

  20. Tat Wood Says:

The OOglies episode that got the show cancelled.

  21. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

@Francis, Tat: perhaps this is from the ‘Rubber’s Got Talent’ sketch.

  22. B. Chiclitz Says:

Really, I am so tired of these “man bun” top-knot hairdo things.

  23. Anna T. Says:

The “cheesy 1950s sci-fi movie” vibes are strong with this cover.

  24. HappyBookworm Says:

While one might make arguments about nothing being impossible except contradiction…I really hope meeting this brain disk is not one of the possible things that I might encounter tomorrow.

  25. Tat Wood Says:

This is why you mustn’t swallow chewing-gum.

  26. Bibliomancer Says:

    Pizza Face!

  27. Art Blacktooth Says:

Not 100% certain, but that wild cover illustration is by the late English artist John Holmes (not the porn actor). Holmes created many bizarre images during his professional career. His most prolific decade was the 1970s, where his works were published on everything from H.P. Lovecraft novels to rock albums like Uriah Heep.

Now we know what a zombie’s nightmare looks like.

“When you gaze into the brain, the brain also stares back at you with WTF are there eyeballs inside the brain for?!”

  30. Bruce A Munro Says:

“Most futuristic brain-entities get to comfortably float inside a jar in a bath of nutrient fluid, but I just get jammed on top of a drill vice. I’m justifiably upset.”
