Art Direction: A giant circular brain, with eyes I might add, in some sort of… drill vice! There’s no way it could look like a giant eyed cookie or strange bondage moon face. Right?

Oh my. This was an excellent anthology. I remember reading and rereading it. I read a lot of anthologies around then, however, and they’ve all turned into one great amorphous collection in my memory, so I’m not sure what was in it now. It included “Unit,” I’m fairly sure, but I’m vague beyond that. I think it was novellas rather than short stories.
The thing about the ‘seventies in particular was that publishers would routinely put bizarre covers on their SFF and, because everybody did it, it wasn’t a big deal. I did think at the time that it was fair enough that the brain sphere looked so surprised under the circumstances.

So.. depiction of a future fascist government forcing your brain to be, like the man?
OR… the actual brain of all sci-fi writers…

JLH:
This is a good opportunity to flag up the excellent Contento Index to SF Anthologies. Here’s the entry for this book, but the whole site is worth exploring if it helps resolves that “great amorphous collection” in your mind!

With that screw going through his brain, I don’t think it’s possible he has even one more tomorrow.

OK, sorry, I apologize for my previous comment — of course Peter King (R) has no brain.

The “cheesy 1950s sci-fi movie” vibes are strong with this cover.

Not 100% certain, but that wild cover illustration is by the late English artist John Holmes (not the porn actor). Holmes created many bizarre images during his professional career. His most prolific decade was the 1970s, where his works were published on everything from H.P. Lovecraft novels to rock albums like Uriah Heep.
