Alessandra Comments: This reminded me of the old “Superfriends” cartoon. Hanna-Barbera does epic fantasy. It’s subtitle is “being a novelized version of the remarkable interplanetary events that took place at the World Science Fiction Convention of 1971,” which makes me wonder what the heck happened.

“Yeah, sure my hair’s fine when the wind blows from in front of me, but from behind me – you don’t wanna know.”

Well, it is a Barry N. Malzberg novel — so it’s all about metanarrative/angst/depression… And it says worldcon 74 so it hadn’t happened yet 😉

I really like Malzberg, so I don’t wanna make fun of his books… books which have no real meaning in the endless nothingness of the universe… books which try use humor in a pathetic attempt to fend off the silent scream of space… where astronauts cannot get laid and are neurotic…
(This could just go on and on.)

Squid thoughts:
“Where’d her other arm go? Did the dragon bite her or did the guy with the gun shoot it off? Where does her hair end and her clothing begin? Does she know she’s standing on one of my tentacles?”

Cruella De Vil during her technicolor phase in college.
Also, the title sure is bossy.

@A.R.Yngve — I still love his works…. Despite how monothematic they tend to be… and how every character is depressed…. and mean to women…. and potentially in a simulation….

In the spirit of fostering inter-galactic/pan-dimensional good will I think Mr. Lewis should occasionally cover up random bits of naked aliens. Especially calamari.

Oh, I see. It’s cosplay, that’s why everything looks kind of dumb.

Joachim, I’m sure that Malzberg is a true mensch and took the blow of this sad book cover on the chin with a stoic face… despite how it made a mockery of his life’s work… despite how it inanely ignored the devastating truth of a nihilistic universe…. despite the artwork which performed a sci-fi ninny-dance of pointless posturing before the abyss of oblivion that is outer space…
(And so on and so on. But seriously, I do like reading Malzberg. :))

“Interplanetary Interference” eh?
Is that a euphemism?
Like engaging in discussions about Uganda.

@ A. R. Yngve — yeah, I consider Beyond Apollo and In The Enclosure 70s masterpieces — I haven’t read any of his works under his pseudonym K. M. O’Donnell yet….

It wasn’t until the Giant Ogling Squid showed up that the party really got started.

I wonder how the squid will react if I poke him in the eye with my pinky?

Best painting by a 3 year old I have ever seen!

I surf over to this cover, and I always, always want to sing, ‘Gather in the hall of the planets, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la, la-LA!’
April 9th, 2014 at 12:16 pm
And a black dude growls, “Rasputin” style:
“Oh, those planets…”

@A.R.Yngve (9): I’ve just re-read ‘Galaxies’. I wonder if this cover inspired it.
@A.r.Yngve (16): This is the image I have in my head for ‘Night Flight to Venus’.

She’s a space supermodel. Clearly.

This is not a book cover. It is an invitation to a party.

Hm. Worldcon 74 (aka MidAmericon II)? That’s this year – 17-21 August, 2016 in Kansas City.
Toastmaster this year is Pat Cadigan.

I wonder if there’s going to be interplanetary interference in the Hugo Award voting this year. Hey, the misogynists got in on it last year; bring on the aliens, I say – they couldn’t be worse….

I haven’t heard about anything like this happening in either DC (1974) or KC (Worldcon 74), though I wouldn’t be surprised if someone turned up in this outfit during the 70’s.
Also, I’d like to ask for “font problems” tag. There’s only two fonts, but that main one is a problem. You’d expect to see that on a bodice-ripper.

Hmmm…
Now I know where Ron Goulart got the name for a malady in one of the Jake & Hildy Pace/Odd Jobs, Inc. funny SF detective novels (I don’t remember exactly which).
Several characters in the book are afflicted with Malzberg’s Syndrome, a disease which is not easily curable and leads to increasing lugubriousness in victims….
