Bibliomancer’s Art Direction: Its called More Than Human so paint a kid, replace the legs with a reel-to-reel tape deck, and pad the shoulders with a couple of kids heads. Its so obvious!
Published 1975

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! 1. Phil Says:

This must be what happens when Harlie is six or seven (http://www.goodshowsir.co.uk/2013/03/when-harlie-was-one/ )

Also related to Huey, Dewey, and Louie, methinks (http://www.jeffbots.com/silentrunning.jpg )

  2. Phil Says:

On a serious note, MORE THAN HUMAN doesn’t feature any computers or electronics that I recall. It’s about a gestalt intelligence of (biological) beings.

  3. Tat Wood Says:

@phil: and as I recall it, they all had legs. Maybe this cover was for ‘Limbo 90’ once upon a time.

  4. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

Sturgeon’s Law mk II: 95% of this cover is crap!

  5. Tom Hering Says:

Looks less than human to me.

  6. SI Says:

“But I want ice-cream!!!!! WHAAAA…. oh and the shoulders want cookies!! And the stomach want’s a curly wurly!”

  7. Bibliomancer Says:

@Phil – Perhaps this is an older Harlie. Later in life he ran afoul of the law:

(All three Ballantine book covers, btw)

  8. FeàrofMüsic Says:

    ‘The Droogs-The Early Years.’

  9. FeàrofMüsic Says:

‘Over 500,000 copies in print’ Sold any though? Or are they all in boxes filling up a warehouse in Battersea? Also, which ‘International Fantasy Award’ did it win? The Ulan Bator Outer Mongolian International Fantasy Award for authors named for fish?

  10. JuanPaul Says:

Ouch! It looks like his hands got caught in his own tape reels.

  11. THX 1138 Says:

“I warned you this would happen if you went to the avant garde photographer for the school portraits! That’s not going on the mantelpiece!”

  12. Flounder Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

@FoM: I’ll have you know that’s me pride and joy!

  13. B. Chiclitz Says:

    1. The kid on his left shoulder looks like a tiny Julius Caesar.

    2. Those are the ugliest hands I have ever seen rendered graphically—is there some a plot aspect to them? Anything to account for them?

    3. The artist appears to have signed on the left forearm. The signature, though, like the rest of the cover, is indecipherable.

  14. fred Says:

Kid looks like he could knock off a couple of hundred push-ups and not break a sweat.

  15. Phil Says:

@Bibliomancer: ran foul of the law… and had his arms and heads removed.

@B. Chiclitz: no plot significance to the hands that I recall. Maybe the artist faithfully rendered his own deformed hands. And by the way, the signature is perfectly deciepherable…if you know in advance that the artist is called Rosenblatt.

    @FearofMusic: THE International Fantasy Award. A short-lived honour from the ’50s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Fantasy_Award

  16. FeàrofMüsic Says:

@Phil: Thanks for the clarification. Hmm, not often an award can make your work appear outdated.

@FSWBT: Congrats on being the recipient of TUBOMIFAFANFF. A feat you should rightly be proud of.

  17. B. Chiclitz Says:

@Phil—thanks. By damme, it does indeed say “Rosenblatt,” if you know it already.

  18. Jaouad Says:

Gestalt intelligence appears to come with more than one sun, as well. Head face and tummy face are lit from slightly above. Left shoulder face is lit from the far left. Right shoulder face is lit from dead front. No wonder gestalt boy’s eyes are bloodshot.

  19. Anti-Sceptic Says:

Is there a pull-cord behind him? If so, when pulled, do the other faces talk?

Suddenly this whole “Transhuman”/”Posthuman” thing doesn’t seem so cool.

  23. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

‘Hello, Mr. and Mrs. McCann? The good news is that we’ve found your daughter’s remains. The bad news is that News Corp got there first.’

Stop persecuting poor Theodore and his publishers lack of good cover sense, you awful, awful website. The poor man has suffered enough at your hands.

If David Lynch had directed ‘Return of the Jedi’ as planned, would R2D2 have looked like this?

  29. Bruce A Munro Says:

If two heads are better than one, surely four heads (plus a magnetic tape drive computer) are even better!

  30. Tracy Says:

I hate to say it but all the kids look like “special cases.”

  31. B. Chiclitz Says:

The effect too much remote schooling had on children of the early 21st century.

  32. Bruce A Munro Says:

@Tracy: the artist was presumably aiming for “creepy” rather than “disabled”, but may have missed the mark.

  33. GSS ex-noob Says:

Fingers or starfish, tough to tell.

If this is what it takes to become more than human, I’m staying merely human.

  34. BMunro Says:

More than human. Less than comprehensible.
