@Emster: Vol 1 was called Eternity Lost (https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?267315) and apparently had the same “artwork” on its cover. Ye gods, at $45 a copy even a small press should have been able to get a decent cover.
When you enlarge the picture, Clifford Simak’s mouth looks seriously wrong.
@Longtime_Lurker: Indeed. Haffner press, for instance, for their Jack Williamson collections, simply used the original colorful pulp SF illustrations, and it looks a lot better.
@Bruce: We have a collected Ted Sturgeon by them, and they used the same layout, with the original pulp cover for “Killdozer!”
We have a number of the limited edition collections put out by Worldcons (often by NESFA Press) and at least of the ones we have, the covers aren’t scary.
I think the artist’s signature is standing in for Ben Franklin.

“OK, you can have the gold – but it means the colour’s out!”

Physician to the Universe: “Nothing to worry about!”
Sick aliens/dinosaurs/Romans/Space Gimps: “Why are you wearing a spacesuit then?”
August 25th, 2021 at 11:53 am
So the Romans conquered Egypt by riding dinosaurs?
August 25th, 2021 at 12:00 pm
Bend over and cough. Got that one out of the way.

I sure hope they all have universal health care!
August 25th, 2021 at 1:39 pm
Now everybody smile for the cover picture.
Hey, what’s up with you grumpy aliens?
August 25th, 2021 at 3:14 pm
I feel like Cliff is about to utter a famous line from “Spaceballs.”
“I knew it. I’m surrounded by @ssholes!”
August 25th, 2021 at 3:33 pm
Who else is seeing Philadelphia City Hall with the statue of Billy Penn on the top?
August 25th, 2021 at 3:57 pm
@B’Mancer—I see him, and I think he’s holding the end of Ben’s kite string, discovering electricity!
August 25th, 2021 at 4:29 pm
@Bibliomancer @6: “We’re annoyed because we don’t actually appear in any of Simak’s stories.”
August 25th, 2021 at 4:47 pm
The Universe to physician: “Nah, I’m good thanks!”
August 25th, 2021 at 5:33 pm
Older people sometimes have trouble with technology. Could someone adjust Cliff’s helmet for him?
August 25th, 2021 at 9:32 pm
Looks like a lot of Dr Who stuff on this cover.
August 26th, 2021 at 1:18 am
@fred: the dinosaur would be saying’K-Klakk!’
August 26th, 2021 at 4:45 am
I don’t think the dino’s surprised. He looks more sarcastic to me. Making a snarky remark like Uncle Deadly the Muppet (and using that voice).
Is Ben Franklin “Sir Not Appearing In This Scene”?
Can Cliff see out the sides of that helmet? Never mind BEHIND YOU.
I don’t remember any stories featuring doctors, Romans, or pyramids, but I haven’t read all his works.

Clifford D. Simak was literally the last person in the universe I’d ever expect to say “Bring out the Gimp!”
August 26th, 2021 at 2:59 pm
Which one is Emily Elizabeth?
August 27th, 2021 at 10:44 pm
@ARY: Same here.
Maybe this book is from an alternate universe where Cliff wasn’t the picture of Midwestern conventionality.

Wait… there’s also a Volume 1 to this mess? Has anyone immortalized the cover within the web pages of GSS yet?
