Max Bathroom Comments: Conan’s date goes wrong when his spaceship gets towed.

Published 1982

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! 1. Tor Mented Says:

“Hon, I want to play Spaceships. You be the bottom one.”

  2. THX 1139 Says:

Faux-nan has finally made it – crooning with Robert Goulet and Joey Heatherton!

  3. JuanPaul Says:

When the first guest shows up early and you’re still not even dressed.

  4. fred Says:

The UAI artist very easily could have gone full Vallejo but didn’t. He must have missed the ass class.

  5. JuanPaul Says:

@Fred the artist also went with a Chris Foss Lite style.

  6. Ryan Says:

“What planet is that spaceship from?”

    “It must be Bee-nus!”

  7. Francis Boyle Says:

“Fortunately after having his spaceship towed, Faux-nan remembered Space-Amazon delivered to Mars.”

  8. Tat Wood Says:

I wonder if the wings on the Bee-Ship were a late addition by the artist.

  9. Tracy Says:

That ship is indeed after the mighty Chris Foss! With a solar sail tacked (sorry for the pun) on. The pole Barbarian man is holding looks like it has a bunch of feathers on the end. Perhaps he means to tickle the bio-ship?

Also, if you look closely, his right leg ends in a stick, like Pegleg Pete.

  10. GSS ex-noob Says:

I’m a bit disturbed by the fact that their boots exactly match their skin color. An excess of color-coordination, or are their lower legs and feet bumpy and smooth in the exact pattern of boots? (Excluding his peg-leg)

And how is Faux-nan’s cape/loincloth attached (and why?)

Did some other artist decide to add the solar wings to the bee ship?

  11. B. Chiclitz Says:

Probably because it has to compensate for the peg leg, Faux-Nan’s lower left leg has grown unnaturally stout.

  12. A. R. Yngve Says:

This was originally intended as the cover to the first American edition of THE HITCH-HIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY – but Douglas Adams understandably nixed it.

(I know I completely made this up, but it SHOULD be true.)

  13. Bruce A Munro Says:

@GSS ex-noob: only so many crayons in the box?

Good thing she had AAA (Andromedan Astrogators Association) roadside assistance.

  14. GSS ex-noob Says:

@Bruce: Undoubtedly. Lots of blue and tan, a bit of red and white, that’s all Arrow could afford that week.

@BC: Standing on that rock at that angle with the peg-leg looks impossible, so I guess the other one is doing all the work, with a possible counter-weight in the spear.

Or we might just be seeing the split second before Faux-nan takes a header off the rocks.

  15. Emster Says:

    With apologies to Coldplay (Yellow)

Songs from the Stars, published in ’82
Sunshine Sue and Clear Blue Lou
    (leggy gal and six-pack fellow)

In SF future, nobody’s wearin’ clothes
At least the artist, attempted to draw toes
Their date was ruined, when their skimmer got towed
Yeah, @Max says their skimmer got towed
    Their yellow skimmer got towed…

  16. JJYoyo Says:

To me it looks like a strangely phallic bee has decided to do some hang-gliding…in SPACE-ACE-Ace-ace-ace….
No idea about the other 2. Are they from the past? The future? Dunno.

  17. GSS ex-noob Says:

@JJYoyo: Maybe it’s the spaceship belonging to The Ambiguously Gay Duo.

The people are from the past and thus have even less idea of what’s going on than we do.

  18. JJYoyo Says:

@GSSxN: That is quite a logical leap. And yet so… perfect. I am verkemplt. While hang-gliding. Which is not good.
Maybe the two Punters from Astro-Cimmeria are the Ambiguously Ahistorical duo?

  19. Bruce A Munro Says:

    @JJYoyo: Ambiguously Anachronistic?

  20. Cornelius Says:

“Never mind the pretty spaceship, Dave. Get this bloody spear out of my head!”

  21. Bruce A Munro Says:

@Cornelius: “He who pulleth ye Spear from ye Anachronistic Woman’s head shall be the True King of Spaceland!”

  22. JJYoyo Says:

@Bruce A Munro: in that case I shudder to think what the Lady of the Lake would look like….
