Venus Fly Trap

Good Show Sir comments: Sturgeon is a “talented serious writer”. Don’t get any ideas he’s some kind of goofball.

Thanks to Ryan for sending this in!

Published 1984

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! Well, even Sturgeon is “entitled” to his ten percent.

(Not that this cover is shit exactly but I still wouldn’t want to eat it.)

  2. fred Says:

This cover is seriously serious, from the tower to her hat.

  3. NomadUK Says:

The untalented serious writers and talented unserious writers are probably giving Sturgeon a run for his money these days.

  4. Tat Wood Says:

Frankie Avalon was sent into space in ‘Sgt Deadhead’. This cut scene has him trying a zero-G version of the Twist as hs friend stuffs a wilder bikini than anything Annette had to deal with.

  5. fred Says:

    It’s a trap?

  6. Ryan Says:

I was not previously aware that Michael Fielding had taken his Naboo character from The Mighty Boosh into the arena of artists’ model for cover illustrations.

  7. B. Chiclitz Says:

“That’s it, Frankie, keep twisting! Soon your abs will be as impressive as mine. But I still won’t let you wear the hat.”

  8. Tracy Says:

This is the only SFF book I’ve ever seen where the cover artist gets a credit right on the cover. It’s how graphic novels are credited, but this one doesn’t look like a graphic novel and AFAIK Rowena Morrill wasn’t that kind of artist. It’s a really bad cover so they shouldn’t have bothered. The floater, woman, and city are seriously out of scale with each other.

  9. B. Chiclitz Says:

BTW, one of the cheesier attempts we’ve seen recently to hide the undrawn feet.

  10. Steve S Says:

If the female chromosome is XX and the male chromosome XY, Then looking at the figure not wearing the trousers. I think the correct title should be, Venus Plus Y.

  11. Tat Wood Says:

@B. Chiclitz: I’m concerned about Frankie’s left ankle. His foot seems to be coming off at the joint.

  12. B. Chiclitz Says:

@Tat W—If Rowena had had the moxie to draw the foot, we could make a better diagnosis. He was probably injured during a twist-off against Moondoggie.

  13. Emster Says:

Venus Plus X sighed audibly, hand on hip in frustrated concern. How in RuPaul’s name was she going to transform this gawky, plain creature into a Drag Queen Superstar in less than 10 days when even the local flora were having an adverse reaction?

@Tracy: I’ve never seen Rowena listed on the cover before either, must have lost the office sports pool… I love her work, especially the stuff that ends up on GSS. Maybe the Publisher needed some cover fun to balance Theo’s seriousness. Anyone actually read this book?

  14. GSS ex-noob Says:

This book is indeed srs bznss, so the wacky whimsical cover is so wrong. I haven’t read it in ages, but I don’t recall giant fly traps, and everyone but the hero (probably him aloft) is gender-neutral, which I guess the be-hatted person could be? Anyway, it’s just wrong.

@Emster: An excellent story for this artwork. Just not for this book.

  15. The Blue Are Coming Says:

@Steve – Oh no…Plus X is correct. Take a second look at Venus. I think she’s transitioning, but the testosterone blockers haven’t quite kicked in yet.

  16. drlemaster Says:

@ B. Chiclitz : We’ve seen Rowena competently draw feet as recently as last week. Maybe she charges extra for it?

  17. Emster Says:

Rowena: I don’t like this story; no feet for you!

  18. Leak Says:

@drlemaster: that’d be quite a feet of necromancy, considering she passed away in 2021…
