This is, like all Butler’s work, a fine book. Which does not deserve its cover. Ebooks have made it much less embarrassing to read SF on the bus.
The base seems to be on water, but made of wood, but has smoke coming out and a lot of antennae. Um? I suppose we should just be grateful that the whatever-it-is has the form of an African woman. Sorta.
