Many thanks to Michelle!

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! 1. Repton Says:

Well, they do have Piers Anthony on the lineup..

  2. SI Says:

It’s not really that bad. It just hurts my brain to think how the huge tentacle alien moves. Why can they always just float?

  3. Herm Says:

#2: Presumably so they can present any credible threat to other, independently mobile species. Kind of like Nu Daleks.

  4. A.R.Yngve Says:

“Come to Beautiful Goxlan-8, and see the biggest aquarium in the galaxy!”

  5. A.R.Yngve Says:

“Before They Were Giants”… so all these writers are seven feet tall, then?

  6. Phil Says:

No, the punctuation is wrong. It should be:

Before, they were giants. Now, not so tall.

  7. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

We can’t be silent before they were giants, and what’re we gonna do, unless they are?

In center, we have something else in the snow. And that on the left is Dr. Spock’s backup band.

  8. Weirdmage Says:

This is not gonna help when trying to convince people that Science Fiction is not all about flying squids…

  9. CarrerCrytharis Says:

So this *isn’t* a sampler of They Might Be Giants’ early work? That’s a letdown…

  10. NGpm Says:

Do you suppose that space man spiff there needs to hold on tight just to keep from being thrown to the wolves?

All he needs in order to defeat that thing are sapphire bullets (of pure love).

  11. Adam Roberts Says:

Is this a They Might Be Giants tribute act?

  12. Brendan Podger Says:

Well you need something feminine on the front cover.

  13. Copelander Says:

The most unusual thing on this cover, space vagina aside, is that Cory Doctorow could be called a science fiction great.

  14. Brian B. Says:

    @ Copelander:

    Ouch! Zing!

  15. A.R.Yngve Says:

“The most unusual thing on this cover, space vagina aside, is that Cory Doctorow could be called a science fiction great.”

Well, the editor of “Before They Were Giants” does seem to regard Piers Anthony and Cory Doctorow as equal talents. Either we assume the editor is correct (ouch!), or he isn’t (ouch! any which way you interpret it)…

  16. MB Says:

Seems like we got a cross between a space vagina and a tentacle monster.

So, sex and tentacle sex all wrapped up into one great package…

  17. Elfi Says:

MB: So when you scream, “go **** yourself, stupid space monster!!” well… it can.

  18. Tom Noir Says:

Was disappointed to learn that this wasn’t a They Might Be Giants retrospective.

  19. Tat Wood Says:

@ Tom Noir and everyone else who thought this: maybe it was? It could be like one of those 90s all-star tribute albums that always had Rev Horton Heat and Shonen Knife on them somewhere. But who’d do which song? Maybe it’s all covers of stuff from ‘Here Comes Science’ but off the top of my head (and I’ve not heard a lot of their stuff between ‘John Henry’ and ‘Nanobots’), maybe
