'... and to see a bad artist become very bad.'Click for larger image

Tat Wood Comments: A gentle, lyrical book set on a world that’s like late 19th Century Cornwall. Obviously.

Published 1975

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! Try conditioner.

It is heartening to see an annoying mime become very un-annoying.

  3. Bibliomancer Says:

Rax. The sound he makes when he coughs up a hairball.

  4. B. Chiclitz Says:

Looks like the Toreador ran into the wrong space bull.

  5. Tom Noir Says:

Evel Knievel and Chewbacca – the tale of a love that dare not speak its name.

    ♫ He ain’t heavy, he’s my brooooootheeeer. ♫

I think we need a GSS for crappy titles. The original title was “Hello Summer, Goodbye”. I’ve never read it, but Goodreads seems to think well of it. The original Pan cover is not remarkable but not offensive (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello_Summer,_Goodbye). So this DAW version is a double crime—awful cover and awful title.

    @Longtime Lurker:

    1. You should, it’s a gem.
    2. The Pan edition spine messed up the colouring so it read like ‘Hello Summer. Goodbye Michael’ by G Coney
    3. I love the Pan cover, it conveys the setting and mood without yelling ‘It’s Science Fiction’.
    4. Rax is a significant part of the story so retitling it to make a bigger splash might have seemed like a good idea to someone. The painting also must have, for some reason.

  9. Tat Wood Says:

(Joke that only works today and for people who’ve read the book) Do you hear ‘Lorin’ or ‘Shaggy’?

  10. Anna T. Says:

The woman has orange skin and her clothes are a right mishmash of colours – no wonder she sort of looks like a mime. Being held by a sasquatch in the pose favoured by cheesy monster movies from the ’50s is a bit much, methinks.

  11. B. Chiclitz Says:

I just realized—RAX is Charles Laughton!

    “I am a man.”
    “No, you’re not.”

I enlarged to try an figure out WTF any of that was. It did not help.

    So much yellow…

Is the damsel maybe from Circus World, or did she Picnic on Paradise?

I’m a little worried about her arm joints. I’m really worried about the critter’s misshapen skull.

I wonder if Sturgeon used this cover to illustrate his Law?

  14. Hammy Says:

Rax – wasn’t there a chain of roast-beef sandwich restaurants by that name? I hope Mr. Hairy was neither their main ingredient nor their target customer….

  15. A.R.Yngve Says:

When the cover is lax, they will nix Rax.
