The guy’s being tortured, obviously. They’re cutting off circulation by applying tight rubber bands to his upper arms, plus, he’s in some kind of tube. There’s also suspicious patches on his upper chest under his chin… blood? Vomit?
BBQ Sauce? For when he’s fried from the electric hat? And possibly the tube is a very very large bucket or pot that he’s being lowered into so as to be deep fried like a turducken? Which might make it gravy.
Are those large unevenly distributed drops of sweat, or is he just randomly bumpy?
@GSS: I can’t recall any such scene in the book, and in any event the cover is downright deceptive when combined with the (fairly accurate [1]) tag line across the guy’s chest. The only thing in common with the story aside from it having people is that some people in it are badly scared and maybe those glowing blobs in the background, although there’s nothing on the cover to indicate they’re anything but a decorative detail
@Tracy: manly chesthair
[1] The actual plot is about (rot13 for spoilers) hapbirevat naq svtugvat vaivfvoyr nyvraf gung unir orra cerlvat ba uhznavgl sbe praghevrf
@ARY: heh. If only they could save us from ourselves.
@Bruce: See, that clearly gets across both aliens and fear. But then Ralph didn’t go to UAI.
I don’t see that one as a cover on ISFDB. Most of the others are less offensive than the one given here. Even though they’re generic spaceship illustrations, at least they aren’t eye-gouging. I mean, it had Bonstell, Emsh, and Freas and then… this. it was reprinted every few years from 1948-1989 and this was the last one. Apparently killed interest in the book forever.
I say this artist took “dreadful” as his art direction, and made it so. Also he had some weird fantasies/fetishes and watched too much Trek.

I see an Xilien, but I have doubts as to Brendan Frasier replacing Godzilla as the hero.

But first, let’s just torture the hell of this guy.”

I wonder if this and ‘The Mind Master’ are the Before and After pics.

I think the artist took “dreadful” to heart a little too much.
So we’ve got Geordi, a random command dude from TOS, and a literal hair-raising.
A conspiracy of two different-era Starfleet dudes and a war of one guy? Or just a bad beauty shop on board an Enterprise?
Plus SCIENCE! The artist definitely SCIENCE!d the shit out of it. BZZT.

I have read this. I am fairly sure the artist did not.

The guy in the foreground just saw what they did to his penis.

Does this posting predate the “font problems” tag?
3 different fonts! 3 different colors! One that grows, shrinks, and has weird “A”‘s!
I mean, it’s no BAEN! my god it’s full of fonts, and they’re orange, but then who is… (thankfully)?
@Bruce: does any of this resemble the plot in any way, other than both containing people?

@Bruce: Another too-common sad case of a generic SCI-FI!!! cover, then. The kids like that Star Trek stuff, right?
