This is a reprint from the 1915 novel. Prolly out of copyright back then, so the publisher just slapped a new cover on.
There is a lion in the book, and it is a maneater. However, it’s doubtful the main female character looked like that. The cover gives very little idea to what the story’s about.
BTW…this isn’t Fantasy at all. I’d call it a mystery thriller.
@JP – he was at least a supporting character. However, the big cat representation wasn’t a source of pride among the feline community, as he winds up in a zoo at the end.
I looked up the Wikipedia entry on Marvel’s Wakanda. It says this about the origin of the name:
There are several theories about the etymology of Wakanda. The name may be inspired by a Siouan god called Wakanda, Wakonda, or Waconda; or Wakandas, a fictional African tribe from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel The Man-Eater, written in 1915 but published posthumously in 1957;[39] or the Kenyan Kamba ethnic group, also called Akamba or Wakamba;[40][41] or the word “kanda”, which means “family” in Kikongo.[42]
It seems more likely to me that Stan Lee or Jack Kirby had read an Edgar Rice Burroughs novel rather than tomes on African religions, but who knows. And maybe Burroughs got the name from reading about Africa.
Glad to see someone else around here follows LPL. Even if you’re not into lock picking the April 1 videos are brilliant. (But for best results I think you should go back a year or two. I mean I can’t blame the man for running low on innuendo. At this point he must have just about exhausted the US strategic reserves.) And don’t worry that they’re OT β though from memory they do tend to be pussy related. As GSS’s resident purveyor of dick jokes I say innuendo is always on topic here.

Oh…and thank you, Tor. The pressure’s off now.

@Blue: Following the link, I found this statement in the plot summary:
“Later Scott and the elder Mortons are killed by the native Wakandas.”

The lion looks cool. Too bad he’s probably not a mane character.

@Tor – wow…good spot. I wonder if that’s where Marvel got the name from.
Either way, it looks like the Wakandas in Burroughs’ world (in 1915) are nothing like those in the Marvel franchise.

It seems human versus big cat wrestling is an idea whose time has come. Quick, someone call WWE.

Given their relative sizes, the lion probably regards her as not a full meal.

The Kzinti eyed the human with curious interest. “Ooh…a *sentient* female.”

@BAM – the dialogue is…terrible. I know it’s a comic, but still.

With the lion’s head being as large as the girl I’m assuming that she’s Tinkerbelle and this is the Disney version.
