Good Show Sir comments: Shroedinger’s Rook

Published 1970

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! Feels so good!Good Show Sir! (Average: 6.44 out of 10)

    I have a strong hunch that this art was recycled from a 1959 British political textbook. The faces look like Rab Butler and Hugh Gaitskell.

    (Behold: Butskellism 101 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-war_consensus#:~:text=%22Butskellism%22%20was%20a%20somewhat%20satirical,and%20Hugh%20Gaitskell%20of%20Labour. and https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/education/resources/fifties-britain/butskellism/ )

    I’m going to lie down and have a cortico-thalamic pause.

    Dobson really liked Weaver for their covers.

    R c3 AND a7 !#

    You know the board has an error, with two adjacent black squares behind the weird rook.

    A book cover so boring that the reader opens it and quickly begins reading so as not to look at it any longer than necessary.

    Left: feeling like a real Fen after finding a copy of a classic SF work by A E Van Vogt

    Right: feeling like a confused old man after wading through 200 pages of Van Vogt’s rubber science and “throw in a new plot twist every 800 words” writing technique.

    @Bruce: GSS.

    (except “fen” is the plural… so I guess it maybe still works?)

    Left: Fan at beginning of Worldcon
    Right: Fan at end of Worldcon

    I still remember (vaguely) the Worldcon where I didn’t sleep at all for a couple of the nights; luckily I was in my early 20s and could still do that.

    @Emster: I think it’s not only OK, but practically required! GSS!
