You shall not pass!

Emster Comments: Looks like a typical dream after a late night all-you-can-eat buffet.

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! “I see the wizard in the back has a question.”
    “Yeah – I’m not sure I should be here…”
“You’re a _moral_ monster. And you usually stay up till 4 or 5 am playing Settlers of Catan.”

  2. Tor Mented Says:

    Caught him red-handed.

  3. fred Says:

It’s a Leiber Double staring contest.

  4. Francis Boyle Says:

Gandalf had an impressive wooden staff. This guy has an oversized foam hand he picked up at a football match.

And here’s their theme tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMcEiPQs8CA

  6. Ryan Says:

All of the spectators were amazed by, and cheered loudly for, The Frogman’s incredible long-jump.

  7. Tat Wood Says:

Dunno where my comment went, so here it is again.

    The theme tune:

You’ll have this stuck in your heads all day now. Don’t mention it.

  8. GSS ex-noob Says:

Fritz did write good creepy eldritch beasties, sometimes round/staring-eyed, but they were horrific, not goofy.

Is there a “bigfootitis” tag? The green thing sure would qualify.

Behind the green thing and wizaaard (of “beard-wielding”), there seems to be some kind of clown; rightly terrifying.

    @Tor, @FB: GSS!

@fred: There is a big green cat in that one, but I don’t think it was that big. Still, the artist had at least read the description. Big green cat/heads appeared on other covers.

  9. JuanPaul Says:

Of all the oddities on this cover, the long armed magi is the most unnerving.

  10. Bruce A Munro Says:

@GSS ex-noob: well, that makes _two_ Leiber books with big green cats shown in an exaggerated manner on the cover.

That’s even worse than the UK cover, which is no mean feat…

  12. Tracy Says:

Congratulations to the artist for depicting the worst of AI fantasy art way back when.

  13. JJYoyo Says:

    Ok, I’ll play:
Hmmm, from top to bottom: Peter Lorre, Yul Brynner, Ian McKellen, and off to the side, oh, I dunno, maybe Mick Jagger in a frog suit.
