I learnt this one from Japanese teenagers...Click for full image

Art Direction: You know what I feel enhances any work of art… glow! Imagine the scene, two young lovers entwined in… tentacles… and around them a mystical blue glow to signify magic or possibly the sharing of deep feelings. Nah I’m just kidding, we all know what he’s going to use those things for. But the glow will enchance something I’m sure!
Published 1984

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! 1. Ian Sales Says:

I’m more impressed by the giant orange chemistry set in the background.

  2. THX 1138 Says:

I read the title as Renslime. If you will handle worms…

  3. SI Says:

Man: It’s dangerous to go alone take these…

    Women: Ewwwwwwwwww… really?

  4. Tom Noir Says:

Ah, the Eighties: Big hair. Neon everything. Arm-worms.

  5. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

“Victor and vanquished combined in her blood to cure her liver flukes.”

Why’s the Miller-Urey experiment taking place in the middle of the downtown area?

  6. Action Kate Says:

Is THAT where the “Twilight” writer got that awful kid’s name from? I thought she threw darts at a baby name book and just smushed the results together, but clearly she owned this and figured “let me just tweak it a little and it’ll be youneek!”

  7. Anrkist Says:

STDs – Not just for your genitalia anymore.

  8. Tom Noir Says:

“Oh, daddy _told_ me not to hold hands with strange men!”

  9. fred Says:

Is that a mike in her hand and are they singing a duet of “You Light Up My Life”?

  10. James Says:

I’ll show you mine if your show me yours

  11. Adam Roberts Says:

That’s not how I remember Ren and Stimpy.

  12. jerk of all trades Says:

Somehow, I doubt those are bait-worms.

  13. Dalton H. Says:

I’ll take Arm Worms for 500, Alex Trebek Look-alike.

  14. fish Says:

@Action Kate: I read it as Renesme (sp?) too, and I haven’t even read Twilight. I think that there was some borrowing…

  15. Herm Says:

@THX (#2), I read it as Renslime AND the top corner as A Slime/Gen Novel. Make of that what you squish…

  16. WingedWolf Says:

In the cover’s defense, both of those characters are in the book, and DO have tentacles on their arms, and they do see auras. The giant distillery in the background even makes sense. It’s a bizarre cover to see, but it’s actually very relevant to the book. (One of my favorite series). However, it should not appear as though the tentacles are actually emerging from some hidden location inside of their clothing, to attack them…and, ironically, there aren’t enough tentacles.

  17. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

@WingedWolf: ty. But does the male lead have only a left side to his body?

  18. WingedWolf Says:

No, though we could presume the other arm is hidden in his cloak. However, his arm is pretty huge. Particularly since he’s supposed to really skinny and wiry, not buff.
I’m also pretty sure the female lead, Laneff, isn’t supposed to have a Cher hairdo, but was supposed to have her nose.

  19. Tat Wood Says:

We can’t see their feet – maybe this is two ends of a humanoid worm getting narcissistic inside a game of ‘Mousetrap’.

  20. Rev Says:

    Treating Worms With RENSIME®

    Why Choose RENSIME®?

Just as Threadworms are easy to catch, they can be treated very easily and effectively with the RENSIME® range. There are several different worming products on the market. So why should you choose a RENSIME® product?

  21. A.R.Yngve Says:

The Beatles wisely altered the lyrics “I Wanna Hold Your Worm” to “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.”

  22. Don Hilliard Says:

My long-past Spanish classes and too many years of reading the GORDO comic strip have me humming “Rensime, rensime mucho…” every time I see this title.

  23. anon Says:

“You drink the potion and they just untangle. See?”
“Now, let’s go fix that bunk bed.”

  24. A.R.Yngve Says:

Skiffy fans are creepy? Whatever gave you that impression??

  25. GSS ex-noob Says:

This is a badly-done cover, but like @WingedWolf said 7 (!) years ago, this series is a mildly-guilty pleasure, of which I was much enamored as a teen. And Mrs. L is a delightful woman whom I have occasionally hung with. Inner 15 year old me went SQUEE upon meeting. Outer 50 year old me was just pleased.

  26. fred Says:

    Sime girl mug anyone?

  27. GSS ex-noob Says:

@fred: That’s TERRIBLE. The characters look like regular humans except for the tentacles, not like some etoliated aliens.

Regarding this cover, I don’t recall their hair being so Peak 80’s either.

  28. Bruce A Munro Says:

She wanted a radioactive bait shop wedding, just like her mother.

  29. fred Says:

    Sime-gen merch a’ la GSS.

  30. B. Chiclitz Says:

This might be the best argument against science-fiction writing classes.

  31. GSS ex-noob Says:

    @fred: I, uh, um. Wow.

Pretty sure Mrs. L would NOT approve of branded undies.

  32. Bruce A Munro Says:

@GSS ex-noob: well, she’s still alive: wonder if anyone has brought this to her attention?

  33. GSS ex-noob Says:

@Bruce: I like her too much to mention it.

Nice Jewish Grandma types should not have to hear about it. At least not from me.
