Man of the Mountian’s Art Direction:So, the story is about a girl trapped in the middle of the black death in midevial England, while everyone back in her time are dying of a flu epidemic. Give us a nice upbeat cover, otherwise nobody is going to buy this!

The singer from Ah-a is in it

  2. THX 1138 Says:

“Sigh… Doomsday wasn’t so bad after all that, was it?”

  3. Scott Marlowe Says:

Great book (all the medieval scenes, anyway. I could have done w/out most of the modern era stuff). Horrible cover.

  4. Adam Roberts Says:

Trying to tell the future with the ‘DNA’ tarot, I see. There are millions of cards in that pack, you know. Though only four designs …

  5. Phil Says:

What a novel use for a TING!

I thought the DNA thing was a sticker, not part of the actual cover.

  6. A.R.Yngve Says:

This is a remarkably “retro” cover — might have been on some 1940s pulp magazine.

Also, it screams “ROMANCE!!!” Because the Black Death makes the ladies swoon faster than Barry White, baby.

  7. Ian Says:

Give us a nice upbeat cover… with tiny people on it, a giant head and some guy riding away on a horse.

  8. Anti-Sceptic Says:

Wow, that horse seems to be emitting own light. Either he’s running really, really fast, or that is one badly faded cover!

  9. Smith Says:

Behold! I have the biggest sleeves in all the kingdom!

  10. Anti-Sceptic Says:

Check out the scientists having fun with the DNA strand.

@A.R.Yngve: If it hadn’t been on this site, I would have thought that this book was a romance novel. Then I would have wondered what was with the DNA picture. Trashiness incarnate. NOTHING about this cover indicates time travel, which is much, much cooler than trashy romance novels.

Variant covers from ISFDB. I have no idea what is happening with the hats? in the German one. As for this, without the glare the scientist at the computer gets his rightful due.

  13. Bruce A Munro Says:

This cover http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51qNCmPaW8L.jpg makes it look like it’s about a time travelling plague doctor, which sounds at least as interesting as the actual book.

  14. GSS ex-noob Says:

Rarely is the SFBC cover not the worst, but that’s only b/c they used the original hardback artwork.

Why Bantam then went with this romance novel cover for the paperback is… beyond my ken. Thankfully, it didn’t last long as they then went to this

(enjoy the comment from Locus on this one; big GSS energy)

The Romanian one is WTF, and I don’t know what’s with the German hat? either.

Poor girl, she’s broken out with a terrible case of teenage Ting! Her attempt to hide it with a stylish headband isn’t working, and she’ll be mortified when her date gallops over to pick her up for the prom. Her only hope is the genetic cure the scientists are frantically working on.
