Even a man on fire can't interest her!Click for slightly larger image

Raj Comments: I especially like the transparent robot woman with the spiral breasts on this one.

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! Call me a party-pooper, but this has a sort of Blue Note/ Columbia Jazz Masters album-cover look that’s sort of appropriate for the contents. Even the font-calamity is what was in vogue for magazine-covers and posters you’d get on the tube in 1962. It’s dated, but it was exactly what the book needed when it was put out on sale.

Just the thing to be seen reading in your local beatnik nightclub. I can almost hear the bongos.

If you squint at it just right, the purple background turns into P!nk riding on a giraffe.

Mannn…I don’t think those were portobello mushrooms we just ate. Oooh, but the colors! Groovy daddy-o!

This kind of cover would get me to pick up the book.

Is the skeleton man in the spaghetti-skirt in the background on fire?

(Now, that’s not a sentence I could see myself writing in any other context than a Good Show Sir comment thread.)

I believe this is the first time in my life I have seen the word “promptly” on the front cover of a sf/fantasy book. Thank you NY Herald Tribune. Upside down birds head at the top?

I hope Mr. Sheckley stuck the landing after that vault.

  9. Tat Wood Says:

Sheckley got off lightly with this cover. The first run http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sheckley-citizen-in-space-cover.jpg was so appalling I can understand how Douglas Adams was sufficiently traumatised to have repressed all memory of reading ‘Ask A Foolish Question’ or any of the others he, um, ‘homaged’.

Imagine a Damien Hirst version, with little diamonds glued onto the page…

The woman’s breasts look like transparent glass spheres with galaxies inside, à la “Men In Black”.
