Good Show Sir’s Art Direction: He’s writing about the fourth dimension? Well I bet there are plenty of space ships, space suits, afros, statues, men in grass skirts and party streamers there!
Published 1963

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! Feels so good!Good Show Sir! (Average: 7.28 out of 10)

  1. SI Says:

    “Come right up, come right up my boy. Let me sell you this, it’s a favour I assure you! This book is six times the Heinlein compared to any other book! Why do you think they call it 6 x H my young rich fellow!”

  2. THX 1138 Says:

    OK, who’s the one who took out the universe’s bathplug?

  3. Phil Says:

    Lacking inspiration for his latest cover painting, the artist passed the time watching a box set of THE TWILIGHT ZONE. Suddenly, he had an idea.

  4. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

    Heinlein, eh? i wonder which one is giving us a monologue about the evils of government interference in private lives. I’m thinking it’s the fellow dead center, addressing the rocket ship.

  5. Bibliomancer Says:

    Jonathan Hoag’s unpleasant profession was apparently Pyramid Book’s sci-fi cover illustrator.

  6. Tat Wood Says:

    @Dead Stuff: it was probably whoever fired a missile at someone dressed as a civil servant

  7. Rags Says:

    The 4th dimension looks to be populated with multi coloured giant women, swirling towards a jolly chap!

  8. FearofMusic Says:

    I’m sorry, that is just ugly and poorly done. It looks like it was done in crayon.
    Dancing bowler-hat man in the middle seems to be enjoying himself, so what do I know. Did they actually pay the ‘artists’ back in the ’40’s- 60’s era? If so few seem to have invested in actual art schools.

    Oh, now. That’s rather snitty. I should take that all back.
    But I won’t.

  9. Jerk of all Trades Says:

    Strange how the fourth dimension looks so much like what happens when you let a toddler play with the toilet.

  10. fred Says:

    6 x H = $0.4
    H = $0.4 / 6
    H = $0.666
    H = Damien
    Damien = Sam Neill
    Sam Neill = H
    Robert A. Heinlein starred in Jurassic Park
    math is fun

  11. David Cowie Says:

    H = 0.666
    In later life, Heinlein wrote THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST. Coincidence? Clearly not.

  12. Adam Roberts Says:

    A pint and a half of Four-X, followed by some, um, heroin. Is what this cover illustrates.

  13. Anti-Sceptic Says:

    Seems like a scene from the intro to Doctor Who.

  14. A.R.Yngve Says:

    “When your mind is swirling from hemorrhoid pain, get precious relief with Preparation 6XH! — now with Heinleinium for added relief!”

  15. Anna T. Says:

    @Anti-Sceptic: Old series intro, though. Although Black Suit in the middle has to be some kind of wizard.

    @Tag Wizard: Here’s one for the “Gibberish Title” tag.

  16. Tag Wizard Says:

    @Anna T. – It’s “Six by H(einlein).” Not gibberish.

  17. Anna T. Says:

    Well if the cover were to better reflect that it’s a story collection, that’d be grand. It looks like a mathematical equation.
