Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! Now you see why Judy Dench will be in ‘Cats’ the movie.

  2. THX 1139 Says:

And when Bagpuss wakes up, all his friends wake up too. All the creatures on this cover woke up and stretched…

  3. RachelJ Says:

The third sequel to this, with the rather cumbersome title of “Volume Four of the Four Lords of the Diamond- Medusa: A Tiger by the Tail” has already made an appearance.

The tiger, unfortunately, was nowhere to be seen, but here it is at last!

  4. B. Chiclitz Says:

I thought the four lords of the diamond were Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and Williams (and now I’m having a déjà vu—have we had this cover before, or this title?)

  5. B. Chiclitz Says:

Is that a hidden dragon above the crouching tiger?

  6. B. Chiclitz Says:

    That’s Tony the Tai-Chi Tiger!

  7. Bibliomancer Says:

The one in the middle is definitely strutting her stuff on the catwalk.

  8. Alice Says:

How appropriate! Is it National Cat Day also in the UK?

  9. Anna T. Says:

That is one trippy dance performance.

  10. Daard23 Says:

Speaking of martial arts…..that’s a horrible example of Tiger Claw. On the other hand, judging from what the other students are doing, I would probably join this Kung Fu school.

  11. GSS ex-noob Says:

This cover is such a blobby, swirly mess I had to look at the larger image just to try to see what’s going on.

It didn’t help much. I see Flandry’s wooden GF (well spotted, GSS) and the guy who wants to join the Tiger gang, but the rest of it is an orange mess (insert your own political joke here). It might very well be a Hidden Dragon, BC.

@Alice: I’ve got a rescue kitty on my lap right now, and another in sight. I am definitely observing National Cat Day.

@BC: We had Volume 4, as @RachelJ notes. You and I could only spout baseball comments. Although I see I also got a biathlon reference in there.

Yes, these fantasy covers are so bad that even dedicated GSS’ers are reduced to making sports comments.

  12. Tat Wood Says:

Apart from anything else, I count five approximately humanoid figures here, two of whom seem female and one’s a tiger. At best one lord is presetn and he’s putatively the tiny figure above the stripy girl.

@THX (2): Neff neff neff, good show sah!

  13. JuanPaul Says:

So, it’s not a book about Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ty Cobb, and Hank Aaron?

  14. Bruce A Munro Says:

Welcome to Chalkerland, the most magical land in SF! Creepy physical and mental transformations for everyone!

  15. Anti-Sceptic Says:

Even Neptune’s head (top left) was blown after seeing this cover.
