You know how they say people grow to look like their dogs? The lady will be tucking into her Pedigree Chum any minute now.

I wonder if William Wegman weimaranerized this cover.

This would look great painted on velvet. Or Velveeta.

Artist apparently didn’t have much budget for different colors. Were all the bright colors bogarted by BAEN! ew, ouch, bleh?
@Tor’s art direction: GSS! Sums it up perfectly.
There’s a woman and a dog. Where’s the deerskin come in — her outfit? Is the dog drooling in anticipation of eating it like a rawhide chew toy? (which would tip this over into Rule 34)
How much hair does she have?! And how does it float around like that?
Can’t tell b/c of the crease, but she might be a bit cross-eyed.
And why are the author and title in different fonts?
@THX, fred, B’man: Spot on.

For her hair to be doing that it’s either really windy (and the dog’s ears would be vertical – try driving a car with an open window and a spaniel) or she’s used obscene amounts of hairspray.
Or, perhaps, someone glued it to the wall behind her.

I think if you picked this book off the shelf, you’d get a static electricity shock.

@GSS ex-noob: maybe the deerskin is like a selkie’s sealskin, and she changes into a deer? But why would she have a dog, if she turns into a deer? Perhaps it’s her husband who turns into a deer and the dog is to make sure he doesn’t run off from his child support payments?
The hair doesn’t really fit either: it’s more Magical Unicorn [1] than deer.

Wiki tells us this is based on the old fairy tale “Donkeyskin” where the woman is indeed a shape changer. Guess deer sounded more ladylike than donkeys.
But I agree; were I sometimes a deer, I wouldn’t have a damn deerhound/wolfhound hanging around.
Wiki also sez “The book contains numerous adult themes including incest, rape, and miscarriage.”
So it’s not like the pretty, ethereal cover is misleading or anything.

I’ve seen the film of Donkey Skin. It has a helicopter at the end. Does that count as an adult theme?

I like the dog but his face seems to be slowly morphing into her right hand.

@Tracy: Ah, that solves the problem of a deer-woman with a hunting dog; it’s really just a lifelike dog hand puppet!

Well, this is rather… what’s the name for the mood this cover tries to evoke?
I’ve got it: New Age Pretentious.
“I am one with nature and my spirit animal.”
To which any cynic would reply: “You’re one with a dog? Here, catch this stick!”

@ARY: Having had the misfortune of being forced to spend time recently with a woman of that sort, I think you’ve nailed it.
It’ll be all I can do next time I see her not to burst out laughing, thinking of this cover. I wonder if she has a dog…
#12 and #16 sum this up perfectly. GSSirs.

This cover sucks…Even for GSS standards.

@Anti-Sceptic – GSS has standards? Who knew!
