Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! He’s more perm now than man.

  2. Max Bathroom Says:

The programme to crossbreed Vincent Price and David Hasslehoff was a great success, but bore a terrible cost…

  3. fred Says:

The chick magnet that is future Fu Manchu.

  4. Bibliomancer Says:

    Dragonriders of Porn

  5. Tat Wood Says:

Lessa and Ramoth are playing basketball wth the severed head of Jason King. Indeedy deedy.

  6. Francis Boyle Says:

My first thought was Jason King but since that’s taken I’ll go with Roger Daltrey and Mr Spock but only if I don’t have to read the relevant slash fiction.

    @Bibliomancer
Don’t you mean Dragonriders of Perm?

  7. Tor Mented Says:

Now I see what people were saying about Kelly Freas and the big, floating heads. I wonder if it’s from painting Alfred E. Neuman all those years.

  8. Bruce A Munro Says:

So…she’s flying her pterodactyl [1] around inside an enormous grandfather’s clock? Perhaps it’s Vincent Perm’s clock and that’s why he looks annoyed.

[1] Presuming that’s what it’s supposed to be. The wings are wrong: they have far too many bones and look more like fish fins. Perhaps it’s a goldfish from 500 million AD.

  9. Ryan Says:

I would like to see a compilation of just the heads, and each and all of said disembodied heads, featured on these Laser Book series covers.

  10. GSS ex-noob Says:

I knew you all would “enjoy” this as much as I did. Remember, I have several more of these in @TagW’s hands. The pictures, that is — the books are gone to the used book store and I think may have been recycled by now.

Also, I’ve found more daft covers on books due to go out. Since Mr. x-n and I have been actively collecting new and used books since the 70s, there are a lot of gems* in the collection to be gotten rid of.

If that’s a grandfather clock, Woman Dancing Emoji 💃and ptero must be extremely tiny. Or else in The Future, clocks are stupidly large. Or both?

@Max B: GSS!!! I’d gotten Price but was stumped on the hair.

Also to all the Pern puns.

*By which I mean the cheapest fake plastic blobs available., probably toxic.

  11. fred Says:

A better scan to better appreciate the hair.

  12. NomadUK Says:

fred@11: Well, from that scan, it’s clearly Christopher Plummer hoping everyone just forgets about The Sound of Music and digs his audition for The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

  13. Emster Says:

Well, @G x-n warned us, but I was not prepared… Luckily, the rest of the GSS gang explained what I was looking at, and I should recover in time for the next one…

  14. fred Says:

Kelly Freas gave the head a tilt in this one from the archives. Otherwise very similar in composition.

  15. GSS ex-noob Says:

@Paul: All the Laser Book covers are the same. Apparently the editor wanted that, so Kelly was stuck churning out endless variations of “Big Floating Dude’s Head” and “skiffy stuff in the background”.

  16. Emster Says:

@fred: this is where you say “Ha ha! Made you look!”

I cannot leave links on GSS alone. Yowch… Not sure why someone thought the disembodied head would make a great theme, but such fun for us half a century later.

  17. GSS ex-noob Says:

@Emster: Take it up with the ghost of editor/publisher/evil mastermind Roger Elwood.

  18. John Baker Says:

    Featuring Vincent Price.
