Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! Feels so good!Good Show Sir! (Average: 3.20 out of 10)

    You’ve tried turning it off and turning it on again?

    Error connecting an establishment database

  4. Ryan Says:

    Seems accurate. Glad to see some signs of life!

  5. Bruce A Munro Says:

    The Kzin warrior waited impatiently for Tech Support to come online and let him know if it was a gun, a musical instrument, or a sex toy.

    John Carter tried holding his sword at various angles, but he just couldn’t get a signal.

    The Space Sheep was relieved that it didn’t have to sit on that database.

    You may see a cat peoples holding a rifle, I see a wanna be guitar hero.

    John Carter is the chairman of the Martian chapter of the Itty Bitty Titty Committee.

    Another day, another crap Riverworld cover.

    Error establishing a future for book publishing

  9. NomadUK Says:

    fred@6: Note, of course, that at 0:08, HAL is telling Dave exactly what he thinks of him, in the green screen at upper right.

  10. NomadUK Says:

    Time for some antidisestablishdatabaseconnectionarianism.

  11. GSS ex-noob Says:

    HUZZAH!

    I’d almost given up hope. I really missed you lot and had no way to contact any of you.

    @Tat: I suppose that eventually worked.

    I award the first GSS! of the year to @Bruce.

    @fred: Never mind the tits, why isn’t she red?

    It’s dark and damp here, supposed to rain for the next week, so this is a spot of light in the gloom.

  12. Francis Boyle Says:

    @Bruce

    I think we can all be glad we don’t know where that little orange finger is meant to go.

  13. B. Chiclitz Says:

    Happy New Year, everyone! I’ve been away so long I hardly knew the place; gee it’s good to be back home. But what’s going on?

  14. Hammy Says:

    Happy New Year, everyone. I, like BC and GSSxn, was very concerned about the other GGSers. Glad to see y’all. Even Eric Flint, kinda…

  15. fred Says:

    @NomadUK

    Miss Moneypenny?

  16. GSS ex-noob Says:

    I wonder if there’s some way we could set up a database elsewhere — voluntary opt-in, of course — to list emails where others could be reached, or else some sort of mailing list/group thingy to keep in touch should GSS’ database suffer another long collapse?

    I am in a group on .io which I access through email. We could set up mailing accounts under our GSS handles as a secondary contact measure.

    Because I really was very sad at the thought of never communicating with any of you again. The repartee, jokes and info brighten my life.

  17. Hammy Says:

    Hey, I’m down with having a database or an email group or something. I don’t know anything about starting one or maintaining one, so I’m not the person to ask about it, but I too would miss y’all if something happens to GSS.

  18. GSS ex-noob Says:

    @Hammy: Some GSS regular must know how these things work.

    I think it would also be useful if the database connection didn’t work for some weeks, like the recent outage. We could at least keep up one another’s spirits while waiting, tell jokes, maybe throw in the odd cover or two or a good meme to laugh at.

    Some sort of thing with a big established database/company behind it, like Google Groups, Yahoo Groups, groups.io would be best — we wouldn’t be at the mercy of one computer for distribution.

    Be good if GSS’ers were traveling and wanted to meet up with others (like our putative lunch in NYC), or to know who’s going to which con, or even find out who’s local to them and meet up down the pub or coffee shop.

    I found one of my best friends that way, we were both commenting on a world-wide site and found out we live about 45 min. apart via public transit or car. So we even kept up IRL during the “let’s get takeout and eat outside 6′ apart” days.

  19. B. Chiclitz Says:

    @Bibliomancer informs me that Chinese GSS is willing to host a database/list-serve/email/wiki group. All we need to do is send them all of our SSNs and/or NINOs and they’ll have it up and running in no time, though for some reason the message ends “All your base are belong to us.”

  20. Leak Says:

    @BC: joke’s on them, I’ve only got a Sozialversicherungsnummer…

  21. Hammy Says:

    @BC(#19):

    Okay, I’ll give them *your* number. šŸ˜‰

  22. Bruce A Munro Says:

    Having a Secret Rendezvous Location in case things go to pot appeals to me as well, but as someone who has been increasingly at sea since the days when Geocities roamed the earth, I shall leave its implementation to those more savvy re the modern internet ecology.

  23. Longtime_Lurker Says:

    How about this? All of us read, almost by definition. Therefore we arel all potential LibraryThing members. You can use it to catalogue your books, but you donā€™t have to. Free to join, wonā€™t sell your data, and is as secure as most things on the internet. If all the GSS regulars joined LT, and I set up a talk group there, we can use that as a kind of repository. LT has ā€œTalkā€, which is public, and private messaging, which is, er, private.

    If thereā€™s even a flicker of interest, Iā€™ll set up the groupā€”Iā€™m already an admin for a couple of LT groups, and one more wonā€™t hurt. On LT Iā€™m Haydninvienna.

    If you do join, thereā€™s a science Fiction Fans group, a Fantasyfans group, and the one group that you all absolutely must join, the Green Dragon, the best virtual pub on the internet.

  24. GSS ex-noob Says:

    @L_L: Sounds like a good idea.

    Admin, Tag, could you mention this proposal in an upcoming post?

    “The Library Thing” sounds like a title we’d see here.

  25. Hammy Says:

    @L_L (#23):

    I just signed up for LibraryThing this instant! Joined The Green Dragon, but nothing else yet.

    I look forward to having the group out there….

    @GSSx-n (#prev.):

    “Library Thing” – in Technicolor and Cinemascope?

  26. Lurkertype Says:

    @Hammy: And SENSURROUND!

  27. Longtime_Lurker Says:

    GSSXN2@4, Hanmmy@25: I shall make it so.

  28. Longtime_Lurker Says:

    The LT group is LIVE! https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/24253/Good-Show-Sir!

    I need some suggestions for a group image. Sorry about the blandness of the introductory text, but I wanted it to be extremely clear that I’m not trying to replace or supersede the Green Dragon, which is the best virtual pub on the net. I really, really don’t want to give that appearance.

  29. GSS ex-noob Says:

    I have joined! Sort of. It’s not propagating correctly, or I’m doing something wrong, or both.

    Ooh, I figured it out. Yay me. Took 4 tries but there I am.

  30. Hammy Says:

    I’m there, too. Tag is Hammy_JLK.

    @L_L (#28): My vote for group image on LT is, of course, Good Show Sir! – the Book!

    https://www.goodshowsir.co.uk/?p=7079

    Though the Generic Extruded Book Cover would be fine, as well. I can’t find it in a search, though.

  31. Hammy Says:

    @Lurkertype(#26):

    So long as it isn’t presented in Feel-Around…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCq_nzlou0Q

  32. Emster Says:

    That’ll teach me for showing up late to the party… looks like I’m going to need the big mug of tea to catch up on this one!

  33. Bruce A Munro Says:

    Well, finally got on Librarything. I swear, it takes me forever to get around to doing anything these days.
