Ooooouuuuuch!

Max Bathroom Comments: The original design for Beastman was deemed unsuitable for the Masters of the Universe line, and the designers had to try again.

  1. NomadUK Says:

We caught him howling at the moon
And swinging such a nasty weapon!
And now he’s looking like a loon,
His head a cat-like helmet set on!
    Starkadder!
    Starkadder!
He jumps and spins and shouts!
    Starkadder!
    Starkadder!
    Who knows what its about?

  2. fred Says:

An upwardly mobile gentleman such as this should have a quality pocketwatch instead of some cheap timepiece strapped to a forearm.

  3. Tor Mented Says:

Who else read this as Viagra-Moon?

  4. Francis Boyle Says:

Starkadder – that would be the nudist branch of the Blackadder family. And Now you have a choice – imagining Rowan Atkinson under that mask or imagining him naked. No one said life was meant to be easy!

  5. Ryan Says:

Does Vargr the Starkadder buckle that mask on around his braided coif?

Or is the braid part of his helmet-mask?

Either way, the braiding experience must be a challenge with those nails.

  6. Tat Wood Says:

They wisely obscure whatever he’s sitting on that’s making him pull that face and yell.

    Possibly Baldrick.

  7. fred Says:

    He does have a song.

  8. Bruce A Munro Says:

I don’t want to pooh-pooh the artist, but the position of the upper jaw and the shape of the helmet suggests a lycanthrope of Very Little Brain.

“… you find sometimes that a Thing which seemed very Thingish inside you is quite different when it gets out into the open and has other people looking at it.”

Probably applicable to both the cover illustration and the book as a whole.

    @Tor Mented
So is there a ‘before’ picture with a droopy sword then?

  10. GSS ex-noob Says:

What is this I don’t even.

So he’s some sort of were-lion-thingy, but he buckles a helmet around his head, ears, and mane. I am entirely in agreement with all of @Ryan’s comment.

He’s really into straps and buckles, as you see with the pointless one on his arm, and all the stuff around his chest. This artist got an A at UAI on strap and buckle day.

Does he know Myrr?* The country bumpkin cousin vs. sophisticated ruffly shirt guy? Do they both yiff in hell?

    @Bruce: All true.

    *Mhyrr? Myhrr? Myrrh?

  11. GSS ex-noob Says:

    Oh, here it is: Myhr.
    https://www.goodshowsir.co.uk/?p=12740

    At least this guy isn’t
    fanfic
    of the author’s
    friend’s
    (the artist)
    Furry alter ego
    Rip-off
    of an old TV show.

At least that’s what I hope.

Or he might just be a Barbarian of Very Little Brain who puts on the helmet.

And doesn’t “vargr” mean wolf? Which I guess the mask looks like, but aren’t werewolves hairy all over? Could it just be some idiot in a wolf mask with bad dentition?

  12. MaxBathroom Says:

Just to clarify: a Vargr is a sort of Viking-era Swedish werewolf berserker with vampiric tendencies (at least in this book), and Starkadder is somebody else entirely.

  13. GSS ex-noob Says:

@Max: For certain values of “clarify”.

Let’s throw all the “kewl” things in at once so he can be totally rad awesome badass. Pretty sure that was the writer’s and artist’s thinking.

Don’t his arms get tired? Despite his superfluity of straps and buckles, he doesn’t seem to have a scabbard for that big sword. And he looks too skinny to use it.

And MOTU seems more logical and less overwrought than this.

  14. NomadUK Says:

Clearly, my taxonomic skills need some work.

  15. Verylatetotheparty Says:

    @Nomad

But you deserve credit for beating everyone to the first Blackadder joke.
