Hayley Comments: This is what the back-cover says, “Warning: Graphic sex between a human woman and an alien male who is anatomically different from human men!”

“So then after all that and we finally make… love… I eat all your internal organs and wear your skin as a sign of my power. Tonight is going to be so romantic.”

  2. Herm Says:

He certainly is anatomically different. He appears to have had spherical shoulder-pads implanted under his skin.

Does it seriously say that on the back cover? Golly, talk about PWP

  3. Parker Says:

Not saying that he looks very real. But she looks like a mannequin.

  4. Tom Noir Says:

Wow, I think this may be the first example of obvious CG we’ve seen on this site. I hope it’s not a new trend in cover art.

  5. Evad Says:

    Issed? Stark Issed?

  6. Brian B Says:

Is this self-published? I found a website saying it is “available” from Samhain Publishing (cool name btw!) but I am not sure if they are the ones who actually published it. On a related note, the cover quality–interms of resolution and color saturation–looks much better on the website. Might this be at least partly because the cover here is a photograph of the printed version?

  7. Some Illustrator Says:

Tom, sadly it is. So is the “I just installed Photoshop!” school of cover design. And as an illustrator, this makes me sad.

  8. NGpm Says:

Who needs a talented artist when Poser and Photoshop Elements are so cheap?

  9. Anrkist Says:

This is almost as hot as Louis Gossett Jr. and Randy Quaid having a baby in Enemy Mine (1985).

  10. SeriesFive Says:

…found the cover artist: Trace Edward Zaber (most likely a pseudonym)
her homepage of truly horrific covers: http://www.bythunder.org/ThunderArt/thunderart.html

  11. Green Says:

It’s a Final Fantasy girl mating with a random Star Trek extra.

  12. Green Says:

Thanks, SeriesFive, to the links to TEZ’s other ‘artwork’. (Eyes of Betrayal was my fav.)

  13. Lanette Curington Says:

Nope, no eating of internal organs before, during, or after mating. 😉 And nope, no PWP. There’s a plot, it’s very romantic, and there are a couple of love scenes but they don’t really drive the story. Just a little extra oomph. LOL

Starkissed (star-kissed, not stark-issed) is not self-published. It is published by Samhain Publishing. The cover artist is Christine Clavel. Since the hero is an alien, I believe she did use Poser. Real aliens don’t like to model… 😛 (She did an excellent job with the hero. Yes, the woman doesn’t look quite lifelike, but Poser has its limitations.)

Trace Edward Zaber (his real name, as far as I know) was the cover artist for a previous edition when it was with Amber Quill Press, another e-pub. Not sure how he got credited with the current cover.

The “Warning” on the back cover is something Samhain does, kind of like the Disclaimers at the end of Xena episodes. Most of their books have them.

Starkissed is available in the Kindle store at Amazon. It’s a full-length novel at 80k and reasonably priced at $4.24. Here’s the link if you’d like to check it out.

Sorry I’m so late responding to this, but I just now ran across it.

    Thanks!

  15. SI Says:

    Hey Lannette! Thanks for commenting.

It good to hear there was no eating of internal organs… or.. is it 😉

The warning is still amazing! The temptation of writing something so strange to get an epic warning is nearly irresistible now!

  16. Lanette Curington Says:

Oh, go ahead. Give in to the dark side. You know you want to…

I wrote Starkissed about 12 years ago. The book and the warning are quite tame compared to what’s out there today.

  17. GK Says:

The first edition of “StarKist” featured Charlie the Tuna on the cover, sales were slow.

  18. Tom Noir Says:

When can we expect the sequel, “Starhugged”?

  19. Tom Noir Says:

Or the conclusion to the inevitable trilogy, “Star-Third-Based”?

  20. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

    Upper right corner: sperm?

  21. THX 1138 Says:

    Starkers, more like.

  22. fred Says:

    Iguana tap it. Perfect.
‘And come on, 50% in and no sex scene??? Not even an “I couldn’t help myself, I had to touch him while he was sleeping, but he wasn’t really sleeping” scene?’

  23. Dead Stuff With Big Teeth Says:

Addendum: Joy Division is definitely the WRONG music to be playing while taking in this cover.

  24. Bibliomancer Says:

Starkissed. Isn’t that a brand of tuna?

Sorry Charlie, the alien isn’t looking for a woman with good taste …

  25. B. Chiclitz Says:

@Bibliomancer—I thought “Star Kissed” was the new tell-all book about Donald Trump’s reign as a beauty pageant owner. Maybe that’s “Star Groped.”

  26. Tat Wood Says:

Skinless man is trying to find the ring in her back that you pull to make her talk.

  27. B. Chiclitz Says:

    “Hey, that’s not my ring.”
“That’s ok, that’s not my hand.”

  28. Steve S Says:

    Meanwhile, elsewhere.
Am I the only one thinking, “I can see paradise by the dash board light”?

  29. fred Says:

The Honor Harrington cover we didn’t know we needed.

  30. GSS ex-noob Says:

Bad computer art aside, I really don’t like how close in color the alien and the background are. Also, artists had drawn humanoid aliens by hand for decades before this, and didn’t need Poser.* He looks more real than she does, what with her vacant stare, stiff stance, and overuse of the blur filter.

Speaking of dodgy humanoid aliens, I caught the Star Trek where Kirk fights the Gorn a few days ago on one of the local sub-channels. Also reminded that “Kirk” rhymes with “smirk”.

@fred: So instead of internal organs, he’s already consumed her cat buddy?

*Although, as we see on this site, Poser might have been an improvement for some of them.

  31. Bruce A Munro Says:

His interest in human women first bloomed after a shipping error sent him a human Realdoll rather than a Xynthian model.

@GSS ex-noob: I’m working through season 1 of Star Trek Strange New Worlds, which I got from the library. They’ve apparently updated the Gorn: I’m curious to see how they’ve changed their look. The terrible CGI Gorn which showed up Deep Space Nine (or was that voyager?) hopefully will remain deep in the memory hole.

  32. GSS ex-noob Says:

@Bruce: Can’t be worse than the first 2, right?

I hadn’t thought of getting it through the library! Will have to check mine. Although I’m feeling a little leery of physical media right now with Covid rates going up and I haven’t gotten the new improved booster again. I did get my flu shot this week.

BTW, the OG Trek that they updated the special effects with… yeah, the old CGI is now fugly compared to the original physical models and paint.

  33. Bruce A Munro Says:

    @GSS ex-noob:
I haven’t seen the old Star Trek with the “updated” special effects, aside from a couple shots of space ships and photon torpedos, and hope to avoid doing so in the future. Is it that they don’t have the latest covid booster available yet? That seems to be the case here in Albuquerque.

  34. GSS ex-noob Says:

I’ve got a doctor visit tomorrow and will inquire when they might have it for myself and Mr. xn.

They rendered all the spaceships, photon torpedoes, and random planets to be orbited in CGI in 2006. By now, it stands out like a sore thumb. As I said, the old school practical effects look more realistic. I think they did well adding in random background stuff so the scenes on the Planet of Styrofoam Soundstage look a bit less fake.

    On the whole, though: meh.

They left the Gorn in all his original cheesiness, though.
