Twenty Twenty Two. Here for you!
As we continue with another chapter in our Journal of the Plague Year, we look back fondly at the only bright side of another dreary annus horribilis: our parade of terrible covers!
The highest-rated cover of 2021 is:
Macht Stahlratte zum Präsidenten!
Our silver medal winner:
Le livre d’or: Robert Heinlein
And the bronze medal winning:
Time Storm
Tag Wizard channels his inner shaman with this howler:
Fur Magic
And my favourite cover for the classic feel-good novel:
Nineteen Eighty-Four
Now back to managing my Xinjiang Dogecoin mine. I leave you the task of retaining what’s left of your sanity in 2022. Feel free to tag your favourites in the comments below!

Well, 2021 wasn’t so bad, was it? Oh, I mean – 2021 was that bad, wasn’t it? Here’s to an even worse 2022! To hell with optimism! Terrible 2022, everyone!
In terms of book covers, of course.

Here’s to the future of book covers – we can be confident it will be embarrassing, clunky, and unselfconsciously incompetent.
Good Show, everyone. Good Show.

Another “excellent” year – all the best to everyone in 2022.

One reason I feel safe spending the new year here is that I’m sure the vaccination rate for GSS is higher than that of most “nations.” Although now that I’ve said that I’m sure Chinese GSS will claim their rate is higher.

@B. Chiclitz: the tricky bit is fitting the little teeny mask over the internet connection.
A fine gallery of champions. I am amused by the fact that the silver and bronze medal winners manage to be both awful and actually (metaphorically, in the case of the silver) fairly contents-accurate.

These are indeed some fine terrible covers. You could have put the top 3 in any order and I would have agreed.
The 1984 cover is the most gobsmacking, though.
GSS is a small amount of chaotic terror followed by a large amount of clever, mostly-sane comments. You lot are the best.
Today I had to go to Whole Foods (blech) to return an Amazon package, and after dodging overpriced imported cars in the lot, at least everyone inside was KN95 masked and distanced. I could see the produce department and spent my time thinking “They want how much?! For that?!” With 2 other stores almost within sight that have the same for much less. No wonder they call it Whole Paycheck.
Then on the way home I was behind an Aston Martin! I don’t know as I’ve ever seen one of those here, certainly not in years. I gave them a wide berth in case they had rocket launchers or flamethrowers.
Here’s hoping 2022 is at least no worse IRL and even worse for book covers.

In my book the Nineteen Eighty-Four entry wins hands down solely based on the disparity between the sheer awfulness of the cover and the quality of the contents though the rat gives it a good run for the money due to the ick factor. I definitely need to remember to vote more.
