That’s what American quality used to be, made to last a lifetime from only the finest materials.

The Sears catalog: Amazon before Amazon. And the Xmas one even more so.

I miss things made from metal instead of cheap plastic. And made in the US or Europe, not China. Those toys are probably still around, fetching big prices.

That first bear scares me. I liked that the machine gun was listed as for boys and girls, because I had many cap guns as a little one, starting at about age 3. Yes, back then, giving toddlers little bits of paper full of gunpowder was wholesome fun. I loved the Lone Ranger, but the TV version, not radio. But yikes for “pickaninny”.

NGL, I’d buy those baking sets, they’d be about $5-$10 today with inflation. But super-useful for small households who don’t need full-size bakes.

Not touching that “here” link though.

    Festive holidays to all.

Every generation has its WTF Xmas toys. These reek of “desperate to get the kids to conform.” But if you pile the cookware under a blanket it makes a great landscape for little green army men to protect the town from attack by giant baby dolls!!! My brother and I did not always play with toys as manufacturer intended…

@GSS: psst – link – should have known to put my tea down first…

GSS ex-noob: Flopsie, the teddy bear that hates. But there’s nothing to fear, as long as you remember to feed him his regular ration of honey and blood.

American parents nowadays would of course not approve of such dangerous toys as the “machine gun” that shoots sparks.
That thing might put an eye out, or start a fire!

Nowadays, sensible American parents give their kids an AR-15 assault rifle instead.

  6. B. Chiclitz Says:

So fascinating to peer back through the lens of history to see how one generation’s normative images become another’s patriarchal, ethno-centric tools of iconographic oppression. What will future generations think of our norms?

    Happy happy to all!!

  7. Longtime_Lurker Says:

Best wishes to all for whatever you’re celebrating, whatever you call it. Next year I’m going to have a solstice festival, but hopefully in Australia, so I can’t really call it Yule.

  8. Bruce A Munro Says:

“Weaving kit?” Part of the My Little Sweatshop line of toys, I presume.

  9. GSS ex-noob Says:

@Bruce: Other than the fact he gets right up in your face in the middle of the night and stares at you, just to remind you he’s always watching.

@BC: TBF, “normative” = “patriarchal racist oppression” for all of recorded history.

@Bruce again: At least the later “polyester loops on a square” required a lot less work. The fact that they emphasize the speed really says sweatshop

  10. Tor Mented Says:

I would order the General MacArthur doll. Unfortunately, the ad has faded away.

    @Tor: GSS!
