Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! 1. Francis Boyle Says:

Well, I’m a fan of not being seen reading books with crappy covers and I’m also quite pleased I don’t own this.

  2. THX 1138 Says:

Yes, follow your dreams, reach for the stars, but keep your feet on the… stars?

  3. Bibliomancer Says:

    Howdy, Duty!

  4. fred Says:

This being BAEN I was expecting an Asscendant cover.

  5. Raoul Says:

    @fred – Book 1 of Manticore Ass-ended

  6. B.Chiclitz Says:

“AAAAAGGGGGHHHHH!!!! That fucking star just ripped off the tip of my space glove! I’m dyyyyiiiiinnngg (to get off of this cover by any means necessary).”

  7. Tat Wood Says:

He’s cosplaying Spidey but in a Supergirl pose. And if it’s ‘Honorverse’ shouldn’t he be dressed as Cathy Gale?

  8. fred Says:

Looks like he has a bloody injury to his right ear. An earring pulled off in savage had to hand combat probably.

  9. Tor Mented Says:

When I click on “Click for larger image,” I see the version of the cover in the photo. But when I click on the photo itself, I see a different version without the Baen logo or the blurb.

Also, Manticore sounds like a cross between a manatee and albacore, so it translates to “Tuna Fish Sea Cow Ascendant.”

  10. Lillie Awesome Says:

“Fans of both writers should be quite pleased” = “could not possibly be more by-the-numbers if its life depended on it.”

  11. B.Chiclitz Says:

Not only out standing in his galaxy, but in a galaxy by himself.

  12. B.Chiclitz Says:

Dear GSS Admin—Really? Has it come to fart-jokes-as-alt-text? Ah, whither the high conceits, wither the rapier wit, the cosmi-comic wisdom? It’s the corrupting confluence of David Weber and Jim Baen, I know. Sad.

  13. Tag Wizard Says:

@ Tor – JuanPaul’s eyesight is failing and his submission was a bit off-focus. I went to Baen to get their image to see all the hi-res action.

    @B.Chiclitz – “Brrraaapp!”

  14. B.Chiclitz Says:

@Tag Wizard—Thank you for the polite reply. So I guess we’ll soon be seeing a “Farts-a-Poppin’ ” tag?

  15. Tag Wizard Says:

@B.Chiclitz – That was my “call to doody”.

  16. Daard23 Says:

Personally, I think he’s trying to grab on to the letter “O” before he flies off the cover. You can do it! I believe in….crap!

  17. Tor Mented Says:

What I like about this site: the usually dry, understated, idiosyncratic British type of humor, plus the occasional fart joke.

  18. JuanPaul Says:

@TagW 13, I was being watched. I had to move quick. They know all about us.

Maybe legalizing marijuana wasn’t such a good idea..

  19. MisterBob Says:

A cover from Baen’s Infamous Spot the Ball competition ?
… thou the ball could be very ,very far away .

  20. GSS ex-noob Says:

This is awfully low-key for BAEN!explosion.

Dude’s been eating too many beans. If it’s a jet-pack nozzle, it’s much closer than I’d want to my ass. And more jagged edges than I’d want near my spacesuit. The spacesuit also seems a little fussily detailed in construction.

Hopefully Mr. Spacesuit has a friendly ship just barely off-cover b/c that gadget isn’t going to get him far, and space is very big.

I’d keep both my hands on the controls rather than imitate a Kryptonian.

That blurb is very faint praise, isn’t it? “For those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like.”

PS George Lucas is suing to get his explosion pattern back.

@fred (8): I thought it was a Ting! Bluetooth earpiece.

@Lillie (10): More polite than saying “Purest hack.” One wonders what appeared before the ellipse. “Illiterate and tasteless”?

@Tag W/Juan Paul: I bet that title was embossed. Was it?

  21. Alice Says:

“… fans of both writers should be quite pleased …”
    But what about Buffy fans?

  22. Tor Mented Says:

At least “fans of both writers should be quite pleased” is better than “both fans of the writers should be quite pleased.”

  23. A.R.Yngve Says:

“Fans of writers who are both the writers of the books should be quite pleased.”

  24. A.R.Yngve Says:

“On the other hand, writers who are fans of fans who are both writers and fans are not as pleased…”

  25. GSS ex-noob Says:

@ARY (24): that last one might also be true.

@Alice: I daresay Buffy fans should stick to Ms. Spencer’s work, not this.

  26. A.R.Yngve Says:

Super Mario called and he wants his Grand Stars back!

  27. JuanPaul Says:

@gssxn yes, I believe it was embossed. But that’s nothing, I recently took a photo of a cover with embossing to rule all others.

  28. GSS ex-noob Says:

@JuanPaul: can’t wait to see that!

@Tag Wiz: add the “embossed” tag! (which I wish could be rendered in a drop-shadow font)

  29. A.R.Yngve Says:

Some book covers are “armchair veterans” — showing off fake stars to make the impression that they have actually earned stripes for some act of valor…
