Happy Good Riddance 2017 and in with a New Year. This is the beginning of our ninth year here at Good Show Sir and it seems like barely nineteen years have flown by. And we have a whole 15 months to plan on something really special for our gala 10th anniversary. And a 10th anniversary means a special gift for all … let me look that one up … ah tin or aluminum! So next year we’ll celebrate with tins of spam and cans of Boddington’s for everyone at the gala event. Look for your invitation in the email spam folder.

On the plus side, we welcome some new friends to the madhouse, GSS ex-noob, Tor Mented, Raoul, Longtime_Lurker, and many, many, too many more to mention. Flashback Fridays have become a run-away hit (with the staff). But don’t think we’re sloughing off here because you get that extra cover back on Two-fer Tuesdays and we get to sneak out the door early on Liquid Lunch Thursdays to enjoy our three-day weekends. Our staff has also proposed we introduce Bank Holiday Mondays each week but we are still focus-grouping that idea.

On to the honours. First, the top rated cover of last year:

No! I am the Lizard King!Click for full image

… which seems like cheating since our demographic can’t seem to get enough of the Old Dick. Highest rated cover not a Blade book:

Heisenberg is uncertain about this coverClick for larger image

We asked GSS Admin for his favourite and he shouted through the locked door “anything with tits on it”:

She's like the Mona Lisa of sex robotsClick for sheep removal

And we asked Tag Wizard’s for his chosen favourite from the year and he said “Hot Stuff”:

Nipple targeting program activated....Click for full image

Actually, that cover IS a classical work of art!I would touch it without protective gloves.I've seen worse. Far, far, worse.Interesting, but I would still read it in public.Middlng: Neither awful nor awfully goodWould not like to be seen reading that!Awful... just awful...That belongs in a gold-lame picture frame!Gah... my eyes are burning! Feels so good!Good Show Sir! (Average: 8.10 out of 10)

  1. Tat Wood Says:

2017 on GSS will be remembered as the Year of the Otters, with ‘Dangerous Territory’ and ‘Alien Art’ (7th September and 11th July) dominating how people will look back on the year. They might not have been as highly rated but, like those lists of top-selling singles of the year where you think ‘which one was that?’, the charts aren’t always as nostalgic as they could be.

The other problem with last year was that you peaked early with ‘On Wheels’ in the first week of January.

  2. fred Says:

Can we play ‘spot the lowest rated cover of the year’?

  3. Longtime_Lurker Says:

Aw, shucks, thanks (blushes). That Schrodinger’s Cat cover is really seriously creepy, isn’t it?

  4. B. Chiclitz Says:

Speaking of cats, here’s a wish of love and joy to all GSSers from George Herriman’s Krazy Kat, my favorite Kat of all time!

  5. Tor Mented Says:

Heppy New Yeer indeed, everybody. Thanks for the “shout out” from my “peeps.”
My resolution this year, besides not using slang I can’t pull off, is to visits used-book stores and snap some covers. But that is going to have to wait until the weather is more suitable to Dick Blade’s outfit.

  6. Bibliomancer Says:

Happy New Year from Athens! Visited a used book shop today and shot a couple Greek sci-fi covers. Hope one is GSS-worry.

  7. JuanPaul Says:

@Tor I am inspired and will exchange my resolution to eat better for the resolution to snap pics of more questionable covers!

  8. Francis Boyle Says:

So 2017 was the year of tits and pussy*. Quick someone tell Trump.

*And whatever the hell Dick Blade is, which I still haven’t quite figured out but I really don’t think Trump would be into.

  9. Tor Mented Says:

@JuanPaul: That’s the spirit. GSS is the food and drink we can share.

  10. B. Chiclitz Says:

@Bibliomancer—I hope you find a copy of the Parnassus edition of Monster of the Maze where Dick Blade disguises himself as Theseus, has cheap sex with Ariadne, and finally slays the Lizard-Minotaur in the labyrinth.

  11. THX 1138 Says:

It’s a-MAZE-ing that Blade should win the 2017 popularity contest! A-MAZE-ING!!! Geddit?

*wishes he’d said that on the original post*

    *laments state of own life*

  12. GSS ex-noob Says:

Much as we all love Dick (TWSS), I really do think there was something a bit off in the voting. As an American, am tempted to blame the Russians; as a GSS-er, must consider sabotage by Chinese GSS (“They’re all foreign Commie bastards!” cry the ghosts of my ancestors).

Which would leave the creepy personcat as #1, bringing back my childhood nightmares, so maybe not. Dick and Miss Mix-a-lot it is!

I have greatly enjoyed not only my trawl through the archives but all the witty comments from the regulars here. I needed laffs and hijinx the past year and you lot have delivered in spades (And clubs, and ropes of Sos).

And certainly without these fine examples, I never would have been in Lee’s re-enactment photos! Glad to have brought such quality content here.

Best of the New Year to all. I’ve taken to making my resolutions on Lunar New Year, which gives me a while yet.

Is there some way to search by date on here? The page numbers assigned are somewhat random and I’d like to go back a year, where I came in.

  13. Raoul Says:

Happy New Year to one and all!

I’ve noticed the tendency of some covers to rate highly and then fade over time (On Wheels is now down to 8.92). So the lesson to be learned is like the Oscars: release your movie (or send in your book covers) at the end of the year and you increase your chances of winning all the glory

  14. GSS ex-noob Says:

@Raoul: “On Wheels” might go back up if it appears on a Friday. You do see comebacks when new viewers see it or regulars witness the horror anew.

And proof that covers can always get worse, with mild snark:
