Nix Comments: This book is reasonable-if-crappy (it’s a Modesitt, so it has Modesitt’s sole interchangeable plot) and the cover is a pretty good depiction of a scene from the book… but the cover is so badly done it distracted me from reading the book. I’m not even sure what’s wrong with it. Are those bobbleheads or are they actually almost in proportion and merely a horrible example of the dangers of having naturalistic heads and cartoon everything else? I don’t know.

Good Show Sir’s Art Direction: We need something to symbolise life… like a man breaking out of a box, a box that’s sort of shaped like a man. I know! Put Alfred Hickcock’s head on that box as a hunky man breaks free! What doesn’t that say about life?

Frank Comments: Saw this at the Friends of the Library sale where I volunteer, and remembered one of my brothers had a copy of it when I was very young. I remember being very creeped out by the image of the stuffing coming out of the open head. And they did it again on the back cover!
